She had barely stepped into the hallway when she heard shrill screams coming from Eleanor’s hospital room.
Nora hurried to the doorway and peered inside.
The room was in complete chaos.
Monica’s bodyguard had Mrs. Quinn pinned to the side, while Monica herself had Eleanor backed against the bed, striking her hard across the face.
“So you thought you could mess with me, huh, Eleanor? Did you really think I’m that easy to fool?”
Monica had always considered Eleanor her closest friend, had genuinely plotted on her behalf, hoping she could marry Hans and become part of the Cooper family.
She’d even gone so far as to scheme against Una and orchestrate Payne’s kidnapping—all for Eleanor’s sake.
But in the end, all she got in return was betrayal.
It was the biggest blow Monica had ever suffered.
“Monica, please, let me explain!” Eleanor sobbed, desperate. “I know you’re angry, but I had no choice!”
She was crying, pouring out her misery.
“You know Hans doesn’t care about me, and the Chambers family—they don’t want me back as their daughter. If I end up in prison, my life is over.”
“But you’re different. You have loving parents—they’d never let you take the fall. Look at you, you’re standing here, safe and sound.”
“And besides, it’s not like Payne was really hurt. But Nora still won’t let you go, she insists you take the blame, it’s all her fault. You should be mad at her, not me.”
Her voice cracked on the last sentence, turning shrill.
Monica might have been gullible once, but after being burned by betrayal, she wasn’t about to fall for it again.
Nora glanced down at her phone, feeling a wave of relief. The recording she’d captured was more than enough to prove Eleanor had instigated Monica to commit the kidnapping.
She turned quietly to slip away—
But found herself face to face with Donna.
Donna stood there, silent, her presence so subtle Nora had no idea how long she’d been watching.
Nora tightened her grip on her phone.
Donna approached, her gentle smile as flawless and unyielding as a porcelain mask.
