Even though he was furious at Aurora’s unreasonable outburst, Daniel still wouldn’t tolerate Samuel speaking that way about his wife and child.
“I said, get out,” Aurora hissed, eyes bloodshot with rage. She pushed herself up from the bed and grabbed whatever was within reach, hurling it at Samuel as if she were facing her worst enemy.-
Daniel was quick. He caught her wrist before she could throw anything else, pulling her firmly to his side. His furrowed brow betrayed his growing impatience. “Aurora, have you had enough?”
Aurora suddenly fell silent. Tears carved pale paths down her cheeks, but behind her red-rimmed eyes burned a hatred so intense it was almost frightening.
“You can get out too,” she said, her lips curling into a bitter sneer.
“Aurora.” Daniel’s voice was sharp, his anger unmistakable.
“Aurora, please, calm down. Think of the baby,” Eleanor said, rushing over to help her, worry shining in her beautiful eyes.
“Leave,” Aurora snapped, yanking her arm away from Daniel’s grip. She swung her hand to block Eleanor, but the motion was too forceful and her palm slapped across Eleanor’s hand.
Eleanor cried out, clutching her hand in pain.
“Aurora!” Samuel barked, his face twisted with fury, practically seething. “Eleanor was just worried about you, and you lash out at her?”
“Apologize to Eleanor.”
A searing pain tore through Aurora’s body. She trembled, sweat breaking out on her forehead. She bit down hard on her lip to keep from crying out.
“It’s not Aurora’s fault. I startled her,” Eleanor said, eyes welling with tears as she tried to explain, her voice barely steady.
“Dan, are you just going to stand there?” Samuel demanded, turning his glare on Daniel when Aurora didn’t move.
No love from her husband, no warmth from her family. All she ever received was suspicion and hurt.
She wondered, in Daniel’s heart, just how lowly a place his wife occupied.
“He didn’t mean it,” Eleanor quickly said on Samuel’s behalf. “He was just worried about me, that’s all. Aurora, I’m sorry for what he said.”
Samuel glanced at her with gratitude, his affection for his sister growing, while his resentment toward Aurora only deepened.
“Everyone out,” Daniel said at last, frowning as he looked at Aurora. “If you keep this up, it’ll be bad for the baby.”
Aurora clenched her jaw, but the pain in her abdomen kept growing worse. The room spun, blackness crowding her vision, and she couldn’t hold on any longer. With a thud, she collapsed onto the floor.
