Thankfully, it wasn't long before Oberon arrived with a staff member from the registry office. "Mr. Taylor, we can begin now."
The official helped the couple through the marriage process and handed them a marriage certificate instead of the traditional documentation. Drusilla glanced at the certificate, bemused that she'd ever treat marriage as something frivolous.
Once the paperwork was complete, she turned to Enoch, "Can I go back now?"
"I need to visit my grandfather in the hospital. You're coming with me." Enoch said.
Hearing this, Drusilla remembered Enoch mentioning his grandfather's illness, apparently triggered by Odette.
The Taylors were well-off, a pillar of Creston City society, unmatched by any other.
The two families weren’t exactly on the same social rung. Many aspired to connect with the Taylors, but the elder Taylor didn't care for such matters. He was fulfilling a promise made to an old army buddy, hence the arranged marriage between his grandson and a Lawson girl.
Ungratefully, the Lawsons didn’t appreciate this gesture, especially during Enoch's troubled times. They betrayed him in a manner most disloyal.
...
Leaving the Taylor estate, Drusilla accompanied Enoch to the hospital.
Outside the hospital room, Harlan was on the phone. “I’m at the hospital. I’ll come over later. Can’t you handle such a minor issue?”
He was there to accompany Lilith, who insisted on visiting Wendell Taylor. She said she felt bad for him being alone in the hospital. He had no choice but to come along.
Women, he thought, always had a softer heart!
Plus, winning over Wendell could only improve his standing within the Taylor family.
Harlan knew the Taylors didn't think highly of him, seeing him as beneath Lilith. But if Wendell liked him, that could change everything!
“Honey.” Lilith’s gentle voice came from the room.
Harlan quickly ended the call and entered to see Lilith drenched in soup, with Wendell sitting beside her, saying, “Go away.”
