The words from her father hit Drusilla like a ton of bricks! Now even her father thought she was having an affair.
“It’s Harlan’s,” she said.-
“Ha.” Odette Lawson, standing nearby, let out a short laugh. “Sis, you really think we were all born yesterday? The Stantons are desperate for a grandchild. If it really was Harlan’s, why would they force you to get rid of the baby? Own up to your mess! Dad always held you up as a role model for me and look at you now. I can hardly believe you’re capable of this!”
Odette had always been jealous of Drusilla, and now, with this scandal, she certainly wasn't going to show any sympathy.
Leander said, “Get rid of the baby. Go back, apologize to your mother-in-law, and maybe she'll forgive you.”
“I did nothing wrong!”
“You really are…” Leander looked at her, eyes red with anger, “How could I have raised a daughter like you!”
Unable to say more, he stormed out of the hospital room.
After they left, Harlan finally walked in. He stood by the door, looking at Drusilla, and said, “You should get rid of the babies.”
Drusilla looked up at him, recalling how just a few days ago she had thought herself so lucky to have such a caring husband. But now, all she felt was a chill down her spine.
“You're ruining my reputation on purpose, just to make me get rid of the babies?” she asked numbly.
“I just want you to understand, I don’t want the babies. And no one will acknowledge them as mine,” Harlan said.
“You're so cruel!” Drusilla said. “How can you do this to innocent children?”
“What’s so innocent about them? They’re not even born yet. Women are just too soft-hearted!”
“Let's get a divorce,” Drusilla said.
Harlan laughed. “So you want to keep the babies, huh? Fine, we can divorce, but you’re not getting the house.”
“Why not? We bought that house together, it’s half mine.”
