Colton had a huge bump forming on his head, a clear sign of the rough tumble he had taken.
Despite their modest upbringing, Drusilla had always shielded her kids from harm, but Harlan, that scoundrel, had crossed the line this time.
"Harlan!" she seethed, her voice laced with fury.
Harlan shot her a cold glance, his words dripping with sarcasm, "Maybe you should keep a tighter leash on your son. Look at him, acting like a little thug! It's clear he's headed down the wrong path. Lucky for him, it was me he ran into. Anyone else might have not been so lenient!"
It was a huge bump, but to Harlan, his restraint was a favor.
Drusilla stood up, her anger reaching its peak, and slapped him hard across the face. "My son is not a thug. Watch your mouth!"
Harlan was taken aback by her audacity. In front of everyone, Drusilla had dared to slap him. His pride as a man was wounded.
Ignoring his rage, Drusilla's only concern was Colton. She scooped him up, ready to leave, but Harlan grabbed her arm, stopping her in her tracks. "You think you can slap me and just walk away?"
Drusilla faced him, his eyes red with anger, his usually suave demeanor gone, replaced by something sinister. She smirked, "What? You're going to hit me back? Go ahead, try it."
Colton clung to Drusilla's neck and said, "Don't you dare hit my mom."
His words melted Drusilla's heart. Despite his own pain, Colton's first thought was to protect her.
Tears welled up in her eyes. She had endured all sorts of insults from the Stanton family without shedding a tear, but seeing her child hurt was something she couldn't bear...
The standoff was interrupted by Lilith's voice, "Honey?"
Lilith weaved through the crowd, surprised to find both Drusilla and Harlan there. "What's going on here?"
Saskia quickly composed herself in front of her daughter-in-law, always portraying the image of a refined woman, hiding her true, abrasive nature from Lilith.
Harlan, feeling guilty, asked, "What are you doing here?"
