Lilith said, “Some kids really know how to push the limits. Saskia, is your hand okay? Maybe we should head to the hospital later and have it checked out.”

Saskia replied, “I'm fine, really. It’s that woman - her son goes around hitting people, and then she had the nerve to slap Harlan? Look, you can still see the mark on Harlan’s face.”

Lilith turned to gaze at Harlan’s handsome face, and sure enough, there was a distinct palm print. She frowned and asked, “Dr. Lawson did this to you?”

“It’s nothing,” Harlan brushed it off.

“It’s not ‘nothing’. She has to apologize! Harlan, you’re just too soft-hearted!”

“Mom.” Harlan glanced at his mother, hoping she’d drop the subject. The more she talked, the harder it was to keep his and Drusilla’s problems under wraps.

Saskia gave him a look but said no more.

The meal was a quiet affair, and Lilith had to leave early for the Taylor family gathering, so they wrapped up quickly. Harlan escorted her out of the restaurant, and they got into the car.

In the car, Lilith asked again, “Did she really hit you?”

Seeing the slap mark on his face made her uneasy. No matter what, Harlan was her husband, and Drusilla…even if the family liked her, she had no right to lay a hand on him, right?

“It’s okay, really,” Harlan reassured her.

“I’ll talk to her when we get back. Regardless, it’s not right for someone to just hit you like that.”

Harlan looked at Lilith’s determined expression and remained silent.
