When Baxter made that statement, it somehow twisted things to make it look like Lilith was the one being unreasonable.
Lilith felt utterly frustrated. "How could I possibly provoke Uncle Enoch? It was him... he wants to send Harlan off to Africana. Africana, for heaven's sake! Is that even a place for people? Harlan and I just got married; I don't want us to be apart."
Blythe glanced at Lilith, then at Harlan, and turned to Harlan to ask, "Did you do something to tick Enoch off again? I know you've just got married and might be a bit distracted, but work is something Enoch takes very seriously. You need to put in more effort."
Even if he married Lilith, slacking off wasn't an option. After all, Harlan was a man, and Lilith wasn't marrying into his family to support him. The idea of him living off her was out of the question.
Harlan felt embarrassed. He knew Blythe wasn't his biggest fan, but he didn't expect her to doubt him at every turn.
He replied, "I didn't do anything. It's not about work. I've been top performer at the company these past few months."
"Oh," Blythe responded, her tone neutral.
Even upon hearing Harlan's achievements, she expected no less.
To be worthy of Lilith, one had to be competent, right?
Lilith chimed in, "Harlan's really good at what he does! All the leaders at the company appreciate him."
"That's only because you're his wife," Blythe retorted. Knowing he's Lilith's husband, people were bound to cut him some slack. They couldn't just ostracize him.
Lilith, hearing their conversation, felt dejected. She couldn't understand why her grandparents were so dismissive of Harlan. But that wasn't the main issue at the moment.
She walked over to Blythe, clasping her hands, "Grandma, please help us out here. Harlan really didn't do anything! He's totally innocent!"
"And what's this all about?" Baxter asked.
