“Kaia,” his voice came through the receiver, overly casual, “before the wedding, don’t you think Lucien should stop by for a
visit?”
Of course Tobias was anxious. He’d handed over 35% of his company’s shares as a wedding gift, but he still hadn’t even met
Lucien face to face.
Without that connection, how was he supposed to ask Lucien for help later? Otherwise, wasn’t this marriage a total loss on his part?
Kaia’s lips curled in a cold smile. She didn’t even hesitate. “Dad, I’ve been swamped lately. There’s so much to handle for the wedding, and you’re not exactly helping with any of it. I have to manage it all myself.
“Unless you want something to go terribly wrong on the wedding day?”
Tobias was furious, but he didn’t dare provoke her further.
“Fine. You focus on the wedding. After it’s over, when you come back to visit, I’ll sit down with Lucien properly.”
Kaia let out a dry chuckle. Visit? What family was there left to visit? That so–called home had long been empty.

Sally, on the other hand, had been uncharacteristically quiet lately,
She barely went out after work, spending most of her time inside.
Even when the socialite group chats tagged her with passive–aggressive comments, she ignored them all.
That evening, Tobias stumbled home reeking of alcohol.
Sally dutifully brought him a glass of water.
“Tobias, Kaia’s wedding is in a few days. Maybe you should case up on the drinking.”
Just the mention of it made Tobias more irritable.
Kaia hadn’t even asked him for input on the guest list. It was the Graves family’s butler who’d called to ask if he had anyone to
invite.
Now, just days before the wedding, he had to run around town handing out invitations like a fool. How humiliating was that?
He yanked off his tie, face sour. “Don’t worry, I’ve got it handled. If I don’t keep up appearances, how are we supposed to survive in this world? You think money grows on trees?”

Sally didn’t argue. Instead, she gently massaged his temples.
“Calm down. Kimberly’s been behaving herself lately, practicing her etiquette at home every day. Now that Kaia is getting married, maybe it’s time we started looking for a match for Kimberly too.”
“Just wait a little longer,” Tobias muttered, slouching deeper into his armchair. “There’s no rush. We can talk about it after the wedding.”
Truthfully, he wasn’t in the mood. Kimberly, in his mind, would never measure up to Kaia–his daughter with his late wife.
Sometimes, he even regretted it. Lillian had been the better woman. His mistress–turned–wife, Sally, simply lacked that long–term vision and grace.
Sally’s eyes dimmed, but she said nothing. She kept her silence as always. But her patience was wearing thin.
Kaia asked Kayla to be one of her bridesmaids. When Alyssa found out, she pouted, “Kaia! Why didn’t you ask me?”
Kaia couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re on Lucien’s side of the family,”

“That doesn’t count,” Alyssa huffed, clinging to Kaia’s arm. “I have to be one of your bridesmaids. I’m your real family. Mr. Tobias Domont is totally biased, so I need to represent your side properly. Besides, you’ve got two troublemakers lurking on your end.”
A warmth spread through Kaia’s chest at Alyssa’s words.
“Alright,” she agreed, smiling. “As long as your grandfather doesn’t object, you’re in.”
“As for those two troublemakers… Don’t worry,” Kaia added calmly. “Kimberly and her mother won’t be anywhere near my wedding.”
Alyssa nodded forcefully. “Good. They don’t deserve to show their faces. Those two would definitely stir up trouble. I’ve never met a worse pair than your stepmother and her daughter.”
“By the way,” she added with a sly grin, “who are Lucien’s groomsmen?”
Kaia thought for a moment. “Probably just his usual friends.”
Alyssa’s face immediately fell. “Can’t he pick someone new? I’m sick of those guys,”
Kaia chuckled. Given Lucien’s personality, it was a miracle he had friends at all–let alone ones who could tolerate him long enough to be part of a wedding party.

In the end, Landon and Calvin were chosen as Lucien’s
groomsmen.

“You two better stop showing up at Prosperity Hotel just to goof off,” Lucien warned. “Start reviewing those online prank challenges. Otherwise, you might not even make it past the front door.”
Calvin scoffed, “Please. What kind of game could possibly stop
us?”
To be accurate, Landon was handpicked by Lucien.
Calvin, on the other hand, had bought his spot as a groomsman with a ten–million–dollar project investment—right after he found out Kayla was one of Kaia’s bridesmaids.
“Does Kayla know you’re in the wedding party?” Landon teased.
Calvin scratched his nose and wisely stayed quiet.
This was Landon’s first time being a groomsman, and he was genuinely excited–especially after hearing Alyssa would be a bridesmaid. That was an unexpected bonus.

A few days before the wedding, Kaia returned to the Domont Villa.

Almost as if he’d been waiting, Tobias showed up not long after.
“Kaia,” he said with a warm smile, “how long has it been since the two of us sat down for a proper meal like this? I asked Sue to make all your favorite dishes today.”
Kaia glanced at the spread on the table, lips curving into a polite smile. “It has been a long time, Dad.”
It had been so long that she’d nearly forgotten he was her father at all.
“I still remember when your mom told me she was pregnant with you,” Tobias began, his voice nostalgic. “I was tied up with a project, but the moment it ended, I got on the first flight back. My hands were shaking the whole way.
“You were my first child, Kaia. I was over the moon.
“Sue was the one I hired to care for your mother. We didn’t have much back then–my company had just started–but Lillian believed in me. She supported me through it all.”
He paused, sighing, “It’s been over twenty years since your mother passed.”
Kaia held her fork lightly, her expression calm. “Shame the one who ended up enjoying the good days with you was Sally.”
