Lucien’s voice was hoarse. “Kaia, how much longer will it take for you to fully trust me? To truly see me as someone you can rely on?”
His words trembled at the end—and Kaia heard it. It pierced straight through her.
Her eyes welled up. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t planning to keep it from you much longer. I was going to tell you today,” she said quietly. “I didn’t mean to hide it. I just…”
Lucien let out a dry, bitter laugh. “You’re afraid I’d stop you from going abroad? That I’d hold you back? Sabotage your future? Become some kind of obstacle in your life?”
His tone grew sharper, his words accelerating with emotion.
Kaia’s panic rose. She shook her head fast. “No. That’s not it at all. Lucien, please let me explain.”
But the moment she met his cold, distant gaze, her heart sank like a stone.
“If you’d just told me earlier,” he said, voice flat, “there wouldn’t be anything to explain now.”
Then, without another word, he swept her up over his shoulder

and carried her straight into the living room.

On the couch, he paused, frowning. “I told you to wear shoes. The floor’s cold.”
Kaia could feel him slipping further away from her, emotionally even more than physically. That distance made her chest tighten with dread.
She grabbed his hand, her voice shaking. “Lucien, please don’t go. I was wrong. Sit down. Let’s talk.”
But he pulled away. “There’s nothing to talk about.”
And with that, he turned and walked upstairs.
She had ruined everything–all the effort, all the precise timing, and every plan she had carefully laid. It was all in shambles
now.
Tears streamed down her face as she sat alone on the first floor, crying so hard her knees were soaked with tears.
Lucien had noticed the untouched dinner on the table, the flowers she had set out. Of course he had.
But he was too angry. He’d only meant to go upstairs, cool down for a few minutes. Yet the moment he remembered the way her
had turned red, he cursed under his breath and rushed back down.

She was curled up on the couch, her frame hunched over, head buried between her knees. And just the sight of her made his chest tighten with pain.
Lucien, you’re so done for.
He sighed, “Stop crying.”
Kaia’s tear–streaked face snapped up when she heard the deep, familiar voice above her.
“You didn’t leave,” she choked out.
Lucien sighed and gently pulled her into his lap.
He grabbed a tissue from the coffee table and carefully wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, pretending to scold her. “I’m not even crying. Why are you crying?”
But Kaia couldn’t stop. The sobs came harder, her whole body trembling in his arms. “I just feel so bad. I didn’t mean to hide it from you. I swear, honey, I didn’t mean to lie to you.”
“Kaia,” he said softly, “I don’t like hearing you say ‘sorry‘. And I don’t like it when you thank me, either. Every time you say those words, it makes me feel like a stranger–like I’m someone you’re keeping out of your life.
“I love the way you whine a little, the way you smile, the way you

call me ‘honey‘. Even when you’re angry and say my name, I still love that, too. I like knowing that when you’re struggling, I’m the first person you turn to. I don’t want you carrying all that weight alone.”
“I want…” Lucien hesitated, voice tightening, then stopped himself.
Kaia sniffled, eyes red and swollen. “You want what?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Lucien was too proud to say it aloud. “Figure it out yourself.”
Ten minutes later, the storm had passed.
Kaia had stopped crying. “How did you find out?” she asked quietly.
“Alden came to the airport this morning.”
Kaia’s face fell. No wonder Lucien was furious. Alden had completely lost it.
“I didn’t tell him,” she said.
“My paper DELF score was sent to the firm, and Ophelia opened it by mistake. She must’ve told Alden. Their team’s handling the Alfly Entertainment contract now.”
Lucien pinched her cheek with just enough force to make her

He trusted her. Even if Alden tried to stir the pot, Lucien would check the facts himself. He wouldn’t believe anything without proof.
He asked, “So what’s the plan? Which uni? How long are you going for?”
Kaia scrunched up her nose and sniffled. “I was going to tell you today. I even sprinkled flower petals at the door. You didn’t see them.”
Her soft, whiny tone tugged right at his heart. Lucien could never resist her when she acted like this.
She continued, “And that day I wouldn’t let you open my bag? It’s because I went to a bookstore to get a cookbook. I practiced for days while you were away. But now the food’s gone cold…”
Lucien pinched her cheek again. “So dramatic.”
Then he stood, walked over to the table, picked her up, and sat her in his lap so she could eat. She sniffled as she scooped food into her mouth, still nestled in his arms.
“It’s cold,” she murmured. “I’ll go heat it.”
Lucien batted her hand away. “Don’t get in the way, I’m eating the meal my wife made for me.”

Kaia blinked at him. So were they okay now? Were they done fighting?
Kaia spoke with rare honesty, “Lucien, you’re incredible–more so than anyone I’ve ever met. I thought I’d grown a lot, but working on Theresa’s case made me realize how far I still have to
“That’s why I want to study abroad. I want to become someone better… someone worthy of you.”
Lucien frowned and set down his fork. “Who said you weren’t worthy of me? Who’s been running their mouth?”
Kaia reached out and held his hand, shaking her head. “No one said anything. It’s just how I feel. Everything I have right now, all the good things… it feels like they’re here because of you. And if one day you decided to take it all back, I’d have nothing.”
Lucien clicked his tongue and flicked her forehead, not too gently. “What goes on in that head of yours all day? Nonsense. At the end of the day, it just means you don’t trust me.”
She’d been hurt before, and now it’s hard for her to fully trust anyone again.
Kaia fell silent for a moment, then said softly, “I trust you now, I really do. But Lucien, do you only like the version of me who’s helpless and relies on you for everything?

“I want to grow. I want to become the version of myself I’ve always admired. Give me one year, just one. I’ll come back every chance I get. And when I return for good, we’ll start trying for a baby.”
Lucien let out a short laugh. “And are you sure you’ll be ready for a baby when you’re back? You’ll be at the peak of your career. That baby talk can wait. I’ll agree to you going abroad, but only if you agree to one condition.”
Kaia tilted her head, curious. “What condition?”
