“Jerry, it’s not what you think,” Kaia explained. “I won’t need an assistant later–not because you weren’t good at your job. I’m just worried I’ll slow you down.”

Jerry hesitated, clearly reluctant but aware that pressing the issue would only make things worse.

Normally, Vanessa jumped at the chance to eat out with Kaia— they were a well–oiled work duo and habitual lunch explorers.

But today, she hesitated.

“Actually… a friend’s coming to see me,” she said, eyes skimming away. “You go ahead with Candy and the others.”

Kaia nodded, but something tugged at her thoughts.

At lunch, Candy Butler spoke up between bites of salad.

“Kaia, don’t you think Vanessa’s been acting kind of weird lately?”
