His assistant’s voice followed quickly, “Sir, we’ve confirmed Mrs. Graves went to the police station. She was asking about a colleague named Vanessa–apparently, she’s been missing for several days.”

Lucien’s tone dropped to a command. “Keep digging. Pull every surveillance feed from around the entrance–now.”

Kaia came to, disoriented, her wrists bound, the seatbelt digging into her side. The hum of the engine filled her ears. She was in the backseat of a moving car.

“Awake, huh?” The voice from the driver’s seat was ice.

She lifted her head just enough to catch Jerry’s face in the rearview mirror–cold, sharp, eyes like steel.

“Please. That idiot thought I liked her.” His tone dripped with contempt. “I only used her to get to you. If she’d behaved, getting you would’ve been easy.”

Kaia’s stomach turned. Just as she’d feared–she was his real

target.

“Jerry,” she said quietly, careful not to provoke him, “did we know each other before?”

“Doesn’t matter.” His voice hardened. “If it weren’t for you, she wouldn’t be where she is now. So even if we’d never met, you’d still deserve to die.”

A flicker of recognition cut through her panic. She took a chance.

“You mean Luna?”

The name hit him like a live wire, “You don’t have the right to say her name!”

The car jolted as he slammed on the brakes. Kaia pitched forward, her forehead cracking against the front seat. Stars burst in her vision.

“Okay, calm down,” she said, forcing her voice steady. “Tying me up won’t fix anything. You just… want Luna out of prison, right?”

He gave a low, humorless laugh.

“Kaia, don’t play me. We both know she’s not getting out. If I weren’t trained in the law, maybe you could’ve fooled me. But I’m not some idiot off the street,”
