Kaia hesitated, her lips slightly parted, but no words came out.
So that was why he called. He was already outside.
No matter how reluctant she felt, she didn’t really have a choice. She got up and opened the door.
And there he was. His sharp features were softened slightly by the silver–framed glasses resting on his straight nose.
He wasn’t wearing a suit tonight–just a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing strong, veined forearms. His collar was open just enough to show off the line of his
collarbone.
Kaia’s gaze landed on the small mole just below it, and for some reason, it felt….. seductive.
There was something dangerously precise about the way he looked–clean lines, quiet restraint, and an undertone that felt anything but harmless.
Her cheeks flushed. She quickly looked away and mumbled, “Why are you here?”
Lucien had just come from Graves Manor. He glanced at her reddened ears and smiled faintly, “Just wanted to ask if the new place is almost set up.”

Kaia blinked. “Uh… I haven’t gone over in the past few days.”
Lucien nodded. “Alright. How about this weekend? I can go with you. Might be easier to figure things out and pick up whatever else you still need.”
She found it a little odd. This was really something he needed to come all the way here to say in person?
And picking out furniture together was basically what couples would do.
But she nodded anyway. “Sure.”
Lucien raised his brows slightly. “Now… should I come in so we can talk about it, or do you prefer I just stand here?”
That was when she realized they’d been standing with him outside and her inside the doorway this whole time.
“Oh, my bad. Come on in.”
Lucien took off his shoes and stepped inside barefoot. Kaia suddenly remembered he’d gone barefoot last time too.
“Sorry, I don’t have men’s slippers at home. I’ll go buy some
tomorrow.”
After all, it didn’t seem right to have him walk around barefoot

every time he came over.
Kaia didn’t even realize she was already thinking about the next time he came over.
Lucien smiled and said, “It’s fine, really. There’s no rush. You can buy them the day after tomorrow.”
Kaia blinked.
No rush, huh?
She cleared her throat, trying to brush past the awkward
moment.
“So… why are you wearing glasses today?”
She wasn’t really curious. It was just something to say.
Lucien let out a soft laugh. “I wear them occasionally. Met with a tricky character today. Glasses make me look easier to manipulate.”
She shot him a look.
Thanks for the effort, but no—glasses don’t make you look any less dangerous.
The cold gleam in his lenses caught the light as his gaze settled on the photo sitting on her dresser.

“When was this taken?”
Kaia walked over for a look and smiled, “My first year of grad school. My senior took it.”
Lucien took off his glasses, as if trying to get a carer look at the girl in the picture.
Her smile held no defenses. The loose ponytail framed her cheeks, still faintly flushed, touched with an unintentional warmth.
It made him want to feel her.
His Adam’s apple shifted slightly. “You look beautiful.”
He set the photo down and checked his watch, putting on a casual tone. “It’s getting late. I should let you rest.”
Kaia had expected him to stick around a little longer. His sudden decision to leave caught her off guard.
She walked him to the elevator.
“No need to see me off,” he said. “Go on inside. I’ll see you this weekend.”
Kaia smiled, “See you then.”

But when she got back inside, her eyes fell on the pair of silver–rimmed glasses he’d left sitting on the dresser.
She immediately called him, “Hey, you forgo‘ our glasses.”
Lucien had just stepped out of the elevator. His voice came through, relaxed and lazy. “Ah, right. I forgot. I’ve already started driving. I’ll grab them next time.”
He didn’t wait for her to respond before hanging up.
Kaia frowned.
Next time? But we had plans to meet up this weekend, didn’t
we?
The next morning, before Kaia even arrived at the office, her phone lit up with a call from Tobias.
He angrily questioned, “Kaia, did you leak that news about Kimberly?!”
Kaia’s brows drew together. “What news?”
“Oh… so it wasn’t you?” Tobias asked, clearly taken aback.
“No.”

From his tone, she could already guess what it was about.
Tobias hung up, frustrated.
He turned back to look at Kimberly, who was hysterically on the couch.
