Kaia froze, fingers tightening around her glass. She didn’t dare look up.

Alyssa jumped in to cover for her. “Maybe she was just startled by you, Landon.”

Landon scoffed, “Hey, Aly, how exactly do I look startling?”

Lucien took a casual sip of the clear liquid in his glass. “You do have a certain… effect on people.”

Landon blinked. “Wow. Okay.”

Alyssa burst out laughing.

Grinding his molars, Landon glared at her. “Might I remind you who’s paying for dinner tonight?”

Alyssa zipped her lips and mimed locking them shut. She knew better than to push her luck.

But then, something caught her eye. Lucien was watching Kaia… somehow too directly and too intently.

She turned toward her friend. Kaia’s head was bowed low, staring at her cup as if she could bore a hole through it.

“Kaia, focus. Start eating before Landon regrets inviting us.”

Even now, with Lucien sitting in a relaxed posture, there was something about him that filled the room with weight.

The table wasn’t particularly large. Every now and then, when their hands reached for a cup or plate, their fingers nearly brushed. And each time, Kaia grew more tense.

Of the four, Landon clearly knew what was going on. He and Lucien were close enough to be in on it.

Alyssa, though, didn’t have a clue.
