He pulled back enough for her to breathe, but before she could relax, he tilted her chin up. His lips curved slightly.
“What is it?”
Anneliese hesitated, eyes darting nervously. “Professor Clocke and the others are arriving tomorrow. I have to meet them at the airport, so I need to go over the questions I’ve run into tonight. Then, I’ll ask him properly tomorrow…”
Jonathan seemed distracted, trailing soft, tantalizing kisses down her neck. Gentle, yet impossible to ignore.
Her chest tightened. When she realized he had no intention of stopping, already unbuttoning her blouse and moving lower, she panicked.
Her hands flew to her collar and pressed against his lips. “Are you even listening to me?”
Finally, his gaze met hers. “I heard you. Sorting questions… is it that urgent?”
“Yes!” She nodded repeatedly. “Extremely urgent.”
She expected him to stop, but instead, he took her wrist away from his mouth. He kissed her palm, his breath warm against her skin, and then moved her hand lower.
“Be good. I’m even more… urgent.”
He guided her hand down, making it clear what he meant by urgent.
Anneliese’s mind went blank, a startled cry swallowed by the searing kiss that followed.
Her body softened under his touch. When he lifted her toward the bed, she buried her face in his chest, letting out shy, muffled whimpers.
By morning, Anneliese awoke wrapped in warmth.
A firm arm held her from behind, a hand resting over the scar on her stomach, lingering until the area felt heated.
Memories came back to her. She had tried to hide her scars, but he gently took her hand away and kissed them.

“Did it hurt, back then?”

Many had asked the same. Years ago, after she was rescued and lay pale in a hospital bed, Zacharias asked. She shook her head, insisting it hadn’t hurt.
Zacharias believed her and continued to help Selina without a hint of guilt.
Jessica had asked too; Anneliese had smiled, denying the pain, though Jessica had cried until her eyes were swollen.
A few days ago, her grandmother finally learned the truth. Her frail hands cupped Anneliese’s face, asking if it hurt. Anneliese had laughed, saying, “Grandma, it doesn’t hurt anymore.”
Yet last night, perhaps because Jonathan’s kiss was so sincere and the tenderness in his eyes so obvious, she found herself nodding for the first time. “Yes… It hurt so much. It really does…”
He lowered his head, pressing kisses to her scars for a long while.
His voice, rough and husky, whispered, “I’m sorry… so sorry…”
Even dazed beneath his kisses, she still didn’t fully understand why he kept apologizing.
“Good morning, Mrs. Fullbuster,” his voice rumbled from behind, lazy and low with the remnants of sleep.
Only then did she realize he was awake. She turned her head.
“Morning. Why didn’t you get up for your run or work?” Even though we’ve slept together before, this is the first time I wake up in his arms in the morning.
Jonathan brushed her cheek with a kiss, tightening his hold around her waist. In one fluid motion, she was turned to face him, snug against his chest.
He nuzzled her hair and spoke in a relaxed, open voice. “Too much warmth and sweetness by my side. My self–discipline isn’t strong enough.”
She blushed and gave him a gentle punch. “Don’t blame me. We could have gone to sleep earlier, but it was you-”
Her words cut off. Seeing her flustered, he chuckled. “Me, what?”
Anneliese felt her ears and cheeks grow hot. The night before, they were both ready, and he was patient, but something went wrong at the last moment.
