Jessica tilted her head with a smile as she looked at her gloomy best friend. “Well, well, well, so you admit you like him now?”
Anneliese lifted her head. “And you’re still making fun of me. Jessica, do you think I’m just hopeless when it comes to love?”
Jessica cupped Anneliese’s face. “Do you want the truth?”
Anneliese bit her lip and pushed her hands away. “Forget it, I’d rather not hear it.”
Jessica could hardly hold back her laughter at how downhearted she looked.
She cupped Anneliese’s face again and said, “Actually, I think you’re brave. You went through a failed marriage, but didn’t lose the ability to love. Isn’t that courage? And besides, Jonathan’s so–called first love is already married, so that’s in the past. You and Jonathan are together now. What’s there to be afraid of?”
Anneliese blinked. “That makes sense.”
“If you like him, then like him. If you want to fall in love, then fall in love. Annie, you’re not even twenty–three yet. What’s there to be scared of? Forget that old flame. Use your charm to win Jonathan over. By the time she ever shows up again, it won’t even matter.
“Even if Jonathan disappoints you, you can divorce him. Think of it as another lesson learned. You might even walk away with a few billion from him. With that kind of money, you can find yourself a younger guy. Wouldn’t that be nice? Even if you marry every two years, after five marriages, you’d still only be thirty. You’ve got time to have some fun.”
Anneliese stared at her, speechless.
Was this really her best friend?
Not a word of encouragement, and what was that about five marriages?
The worst part was that Jessica sounded like one of those self–help tapes. The more Anneliese listened, the more it started to make sense.
She was overwhelmed. She shoved Jessica straight into the elevator and walked away.
Jessica watched her friend’s lighter steps and raised her brows with a smile.
She wasn’t trying to trick her. She just saw things clearly from the outside.

She didn’t know exactly how Jonathan felt about his first love, but she was sure he truly cared about Anneliese.
In fact, he seemed even more lovestruck than she was.
Rather than let Anneliese keep hesitating, it was better to give her a push.
That first love? Jessica believed Anneliese’s charm would easily win out, unless Jonathan was blind like Zacharias.
On her way back to the hospital room, Anneliese was still thinking about Jessica’s words.
She remembered that her marriage to Jonathan was supposed to last two years by agreement. Suddenly, she felt less conflicted.
It was only two years. She decided not to overthink it. She would focus on getting along with him and making the marriage work.
If Jonathan fell in love with her after two years, that would be the best outcome.
If he still wanted a divorce by then, she wouldn’t have any regrets. Like Jessica said, she would only be twenty–four or twenty–five. She could find someone even better.
With that thought, her mood lifted and her steps felt lighter.
She stayed with her grandma a little longer, then left the hospital. She was about to drive to the airport to pick up Alexander when she was stopped in the parking lot by a man who looked like a butler.
“Ms. Claude, hello. My lady is waiting at the cafe across from the hospital. She would like to have a word with you. Please follow me.”
Anneliese glanced at the man and found the whole thing strange.
She didn’t follow him. Instead, she unlocked her Maserati, opened the door, and got in.
“Ms. Claude!”
Hearing the noise behind her, the man turned and saw Anneliese starting the changed. He rushed to the driver’s side and knocked on the window in a hurry.
Anneliese gave him no chance to drag things out. She backed out smoothly, turned the wheel, and stepped on the gas. She drove away, leaving nothing but exhaust behind.
The man was left standing there, coughing in the cloud of smoke, his face dark with anger. He
