Given Jonathan’s status, no one in their right mind would dare to dump coffee on him.
Penelope knew exactly who was responsible for this mess. She nodded as if it were nothing, then turned and gave Anneliese’s hand a gentle pat.
“Dinner’s not ready yet. Anne, go change into something more comfortable, and help Jonathan while you’re at it.”
“Okay, I’ll get changed and come back down to keep you company, Grandma.”
Anneliese obediently followed Jonathan upstairs. As soon as their figures disappeared at the elevator, Penelope’s expression darkened.
“Elizabeth is just getting more and more out of line!”
The maid beside her didn’t dare comment.
Penelope picked up her phone and dialed Elizabeth.
At that moment, Elizabeth was still on her way home, stuck in traffic and annoyed. Seeing Penelope’s call pop up, she frowned but answered anyway.
“Penelope…”
“Elizabeth, you’re going too far. I have never once used my mother–in–law status to pressure you or make you suffer, but you’ve got some nerve bullying Anneliese.”
Elizabeth’s face stiffened. “Penelope, you’ve got it all wrong, that’s not what happened! Where are you hearing this from?”
That’s just great.
Anneliese is really something else. She’d barely left and already ran to tattle to Penelope.
That old hen has completely lost her mind. How dare she put me down for that little tramp!
“I handpicked that granddaughter–in–law myself. Do you have a problem with that? Nobody said a thing to me. I invited both kids over for dinner, and what you did is written all over Jonathan. You think I can’t see for myself? You’re giving me a headache!”
Elizabeth’s expression darkened.

Penelope clearly didn’t care what she had to say or explain. She was just dead set on siding with Anneliese.
If Anneliese actually came from a good background, maybe she could understand and let it go. But Anneliese was beneath Jonathan in every way, and yet Penelope wasn’t trying to get them to divorce before anyone in Halden found out.
Instead, she was letting things slide and even scolding Elizabeth, the current Fullbuster family matriarch, all for Anneliese.
“Penelope…”
She frowned, but Penelope cut her off with a weary sigh.
“Enough. You’ve been in Oceaton long enough. If you have nothing better to do, just go back to Halden or go abroad for a while. You’re pushing middle age already, and you still haven’t figured your life out. Stop meddling in the kids‘ marriage!”
With that, Penelope hung up.
Elizabeth clutched her phone, her chest rising and falling with anger. Under the neon lights streaming in through the car window, her face looked grim.
Jonathan led Anneliese into the room Penelope had prepared for them last time.
Thankfully, everything inside was perfectly normal this time.
“Go take a shower. I’ll get you some fresh clothes.”
Anneliese figured Jonathan had to be uncomfortable, so she hurried him.
She turned to head for the closet, but he caught her by the wrist.
“What is it?” Anneliese glanced back.
“Let’s shower together, okay?” He wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on her shoulder, his nose nuzzling the side of her neck.
The thought of sharing a shower with him brought back all the wild memories of last night. The rush of hormones was overwhelming.
Anneliese’s ears turned pink. She really wasn’t ready for that.
“I… I didn’t get coffee on me. Go shower, I want to go back down and talk with Grandma.”
