Because of her injuries, Yvonne stumbled as she climbed up, leaning heavily on Natalic for support. Both of them reeked of blood and decay, a nauseating stench that clung to their skin. Even Flynn couldn’t stand the smell coming from himself.
“Stay away from me,” he muttered. “I smell awful right now.”
Natalie smelled it too but didn’t seem to care. “Yvonne, did you get it?”
“I did.”
Yvonne started to pull the item out, but Natalie quickly stopped her. “Keep it for now. We’ll
deal with it at home.”
After what had just happened, the place would soon be swarming with police. Once they sealed off the Stone residence for investigation, anything exposed by accident could cause
serious trouble later.
But Baron had gone after the sniper and hadn’t returned yet. The silence made Natalie uneasy.
Flynn agreed with her. “She’s right. This place is about to be locked down completely. Thanks to Logan, no one’s getting back into the Stone residence anytime soon. If we’ve got nothing else to handle here, we should head back to the villa.”
He had barely finished speaking when footsteps echoed from outside.
Yvonne reacted instinctively and shoved the item into Flynn’s hands.
He blinked in surprise.
“You’re the Stone Group president,” Yvonne whispered. “They won’t dare search you. It’ll be safest with you.”
Flynn frowned slightly.
“She’s right,” Natalie said firmly. “You hold it.”
Since Natalie had spoken, Flynn didn’t argue. He slipped the item into his inner shirt pocket. Natalie caught a glimpse–it looked like a disk.
She immediately moved to Ruby’s side and whispered, “Mom, can you play along with me for
a moment?”

Whoever was coming, it definitely wasn’t Baron. Natalic would’ve recognized his footsteps anywhere. If it wasn’t him, she needed a reason for why they were all crowding around the basement door.
No matter who came, she wasn’t about to hand over what Xenon had left behind.
Ruby, ever the devoted mother, would do anything her daughter asked. “Tell me what to do.”
Natalie looked a little embarrassed. “Mom, remember how you said you wanted to go down and check earlier? Now’s a good time to act it out.”
“Huh?” Ruby blinked, confused.
Flynn and Yvonne froze too.
Before they could react, the footsteps grew louder–closer.
Ruby suddenly jumped up from her chair and began to cry out in a trembling, panicked voice. “Let me go! I want to go down to the basement! My daughter was locked in a basement by the Summers family! Those monsters almost beat her to death! I have to see for myself–she’s waiting for me down there!”
Her sudden outburst startled Flynn. “Mom, don’t scare me like that! This isn’t the Summers‘ place! My sister’s right here–see? She’s fine!”
Natalie hadn’t expected Ruby to start acting so fast. And the worst part was–it didn’t even look like acting. She’d thrown herself into the role completely.
Watching her mother’s frantic tears and thinking about how much she cared for her, Natalie’s eyes turned red. “Mom, please, I’m right here. There’s no one down there.”
But Ruby, fully caught up in the performance, refused to stop. “Let me go! My daughter’s still down there waiting for me! How can you all just stand there while she’s being beaten to death? What kind of people are you?”
“You’re mistaken. She’s right here,” Yvonne said quickly, stepping forward to help calm her.
But Ruby fought them off, trying to push toward the basement.
