Charles leaned against the bathroom wall, and before he could even finish what he was saying, Teresa hung up on him.
Watching his phone screen fade to black, Charles felt a wave of annoyance for no reason. He fished out a cigarette and lit up.
As the lighter sparked, Jason stepped out of the bathroom, looking curious. “Who were you on the phone with? Why all the mystery?”
Charles took a long drag, blowing out smoke as his eyes grew cold. “My wife.”
‘His wife?‘ Jason thought, pausing for a moment before it finally hit him that Charles was talking about Teresa.
“What’s the deal? You never call her, do you?” Jason asked.
H
Lately, Charles felt like he’d changed a bit. He couldn’t stop thinking about Teresa and was always curious about what she was doing.
But then again, she was Yolanda’s mom. Of course, he’d care.
Charles didn’t respond to Jason’s question. Honestly, he had no idea what to say.
When his cigarette was almost finished, he finally straightened up and said to Jason, “Teresa has been acting up lately. Should I step in or something?”
Jason just stared at him, eyes wide, completely speechless.
‘How am I supposed to answer that?‘ Jason thought, feeling totally lost.
Charles didn’t push for a reply. He just walked out of the bathroom in silence.
When he got back to the table, Yolanda could barely keep her eyes open, her head resting on Naomi’s lap.
Naomi looked up as Charles and Jason returned. “Charles, Jason, what took you so long?”
Charles sat down next to Naomi, his expression unreadable. “Someone had to take a dump.”
Finn, who was sipping his wine, nearly choked on it when he heard that.
Jason knew Charles was throwing him under the bus, and seeing Finn laughing at him, he couldn’t help but shoot Finn a glare.
Yolanda sleepily lifted her head off Naomi’s lap.
Jason slouched over the table, grinning, “Yolanda, tell me. Who do you usually share a bed with at night?”
Yolanda rubbed her eyes, let out a big yawn, and mumbled, “I always share a bed with Miss Naomi.”
Jason put on a serious face. “What if you sleep over at my place tonight?”
Yolanda scrunched up her nose. “Why?”
Jason beckoned Yolanda over with a finger. “Come here. I have something to whisper to you.”
Yolanda, curious, stepped onto the couch and pushed her little head close to Jason.
Jason leaned in and whispered in her ear, “Because if you stay, you’ll mess up your dad and Miss Naomi’s special grown–up time.”
Jason always felt Naomi was the one who truly belonged with Charles.
So when Charles suddenly mentioned Teresa out of nowhere, Jason could sense trouble brewing for Naomi
He figured he’d try to play matchmaker behind the scenes.
Jason thought, ‘With Yolanda acting as the ultimate third wheel. Charles and Naomi can’t even sleep together. How are they ever supposed to take their relationship to the next level?
But Yolanda just looked puzzled “What’s special grown–up time?”
Jason leaned in and whispered softly. “Do you want your dad and Miss Naomi to always stay by your side? Wouldn’t you like to have a little brother or sister?”

At the mention of a sibling, Yolanda immediately shook her head. “No way! Having a baby means blood, and I don’t want Miss Naomi to
bleed.”
Yolanda got a bit agitated, and Charles and Naomi instinctively glanced over at her.
Jason hurried to reassure her. “Okay, okay, no blood, no blood.”
After Yolanda calmed down, Jason then asked, “So, are you brave enough to sleep alone?”
Yolanda thought for a moment and then nodded. “Yeah.”
Jason snapped his fingers. “Alright! From today on, you’ll be sleeping by yourself.”
Teresa’s voice was frosty. “Charles, I’m a doctor. I only care about the results.”

With that, she had nothing more to say to Charles and made her way straight to Yolanda’s room.
When she opened the door, Yolanda was still fast asleep in bed.
It was almost time for school, so Teresa softly called out, “Yolanda, it’s time to get up for school.”
Yolanda rolled over and grumbled, “Mom, I just want to sleep a little longer. Stop bugging me.”
Teresa reminded her, “It’s Monday. Don’t you have school?”
Yolanda pulled the blanket over her head. “Can’t I take the day off? Didn’t I skip last week too?”
Teresa, getting a bit frustrated, replied firmly, “No. Your stomach doesn’t hurt anymore, used to being on time and not leaving early.”

With that, she stood up.
Yolanda just muttered a reply and didn’t say another word.
As Teresa walked away, she kept turning to look back at the bed, secretly wishing Yolanda would get up and admit she was wrong.
But nothing happened. Yolanda just stayed put.
