Chapter 261
Teresa hung up the phone and went to check on Wendy.
Wendy was having another nightmare, crying out heartbreaking words in her sleep.
Teresa kept stroking her hair, comforting her over and over.
After a long while, Wendy finally settled down and her mood gradually calmed.
Once Wendy drifted off into a deep sleep again, Teresa finally reached for her phone.

She blinked in surprise when she realized Charles’s call was still connected–it hadn’t hung up, and the call timer showed they’d been on the line for over twenty minutes.
Teresa hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper as she tried, “Charles?”
On the other end, Charles had kept his phone pressed to his ear the whole time. The moment he heard Teresa’s voice, he answered without missing a beat, “Yeah, I’m here.”
Teresa heard a softness in his voice that felt unfamiliar, almost surreal.
After a brief pause, she said, “If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”
Charles seemed worried she’d end the call, so he quickly added, “It’s been ages since we all sat down for a nice meal together.”
But before he could say anything else, the line went dead with a series of beeps.
Teresa had already hung up and set her phone aside–she didn’t catch a word of what Charles had said.
She could tell he was speaking, but she didn’t really register a single word.
Charles lay on his side, eyes fixed on his phone’s now–black screen where the call had just ended. He felt lost, unable to even track where his thoughts were drifting.
Somehow, almost absentmindedly, he tapped open his messages, navigating into his old chat with Teresa.
Scrolling upward, he saw it was filled with line after line–countless reminders of how much she used to love him.
But the more he looked, the more it hit him… Teresa wasn’t the same person anymore.
Back then, just one cough from him would have her up in the middle of the night, simmering a pot of pear soup for him. But now, even when he said he missed her, she didn’t respond at all.
Charles felt a heaviness in his heart, and sleep just wouldn’t come.
After a bit of hesitation, he got up and walked toward Yolanda’s room.
As soon as he walked in, Yolanda’s eyes fluttered open.
Seeing Charles, she rubbed her sleepy eyes and mumbled, “Daddy?”
Charles sat on the edge of the bed, reached out to gently rub Yolanda’s cheek, and said, “Hey, can I ask you something?”
Yolanda nodded. “Okay, Daddy. Ask me.”
Charles thought for a moment, then finally said, “Is Mommy nice to you?”
Yolanda considered it seriously, then answered, “I forgot”
Charles blinked, a bit taken aback. He glanced down at Yolanda, his tone careful and gentle. “Hey, Yolanda, can you tell Daddy—dist Mommy used to treat you well?”
Yolanda didn’t reply. Instead, she burrowed quietly into Charles’s embrace
Noticing how Yolanda seemed to shy away whenever Teresa was mentioned, Charles just had to remind her. “You used to tell me Mommy was the nicest person ever, remember? You even said you’d stick by her no matter what.”

Yolanda really had said all that before.
But after all this time, things had changed completely.
But as soon as Charles mentioned it, Yolanda’s eyes started to turn red with tears.
All of Teresa’s words and everything she’d done for her flashed vividly through her mind.
The more she thought about it, the more the tears streamed down her cheeks.

Still, she hugged Charles and murmured, “Daddy, let’s stop thinking about Mommy, okay? Those are all things from the past. We’ve got Miss Naomi now, haven’t we?”
Hearing Yolanda say that, Charles finally felt the weight in his chest begin to ease. He gently ruffled her hair and replied softly, “Yeah, now that we have Naomi, things will only get better for us.”
Seeing it was Charles, he immediately called out, “Come here, I need to talk to you.”
Hearing this, Richard closed his newspaper and turned to look at Charles. “Whatever’s happened, she still ought to come home, don’t you think?”
After a pause, he added, “I’m just an old man–don’t I at least get to be mad about it?”
Charles finished his bowl of porridge quickly, just as Richard wrapped up what he had to say.
She considered just ignoring it, but before she could decide, the phone startest buzzing again.
This time, it was Charles calling for the second time.

With a little sigh, Teresa wiped her hands on her clothes and finally picked up.
Charles’s calm, steady voice came through the phone. “You’re not off work yet?”
‘Off work?‘ Teresa was thrown for a moment, not expecting that question.
She shot back with a touch of sarcasm, “I don’t even have a job right now. How am I supposed to be getting off work?”
Charles sounded genuinely confused. “So… are you at Sullivan Mansion then?”
Teresa didn’t want to answer, her tone turning icy. “Sorry, not something I care to share.”
Charles wasn’t fazed at all. He just continued, “Grandpa wants you to come by tonight. He said he needs to talk to you.”
Teresa didn’t say a word–she just hung up on him, ice–cold.
Just as Teresa tucked her phone away, Wendy called softly from the bedroom, “Teresa?”

Teresa hurried straight in. When she saw how sickly pale Wendy looked, her heart ached, torn between pain and helplessness.
She sat down on the edge of the bed. Wendy, eyes red from crying, gripped Teresa’s hand tight, begging, “Can you get me some emergency contraception? Please?”
“That hurt like a needle straight to my heart, Teresa thought, her chest tightening.
Seeing Wendy like that, Teresa couldn’t help but cry too.
Teresa didn’t even hesitate. “Alright, I’ll get it for you–I’m heading out right now.”
