When She Walks Away (Teresa) novel Chapter 66

Chapter 66

After downing a glass of red wine. Teresa suddenly broke down in tears, feeling miserable. She pressed a hand to her chest, her heart a mess of panic and confusion.

Just then, her phone rang. She glanced down and, to her surprise, saw it was her brother, Theodore Sullivan, calling.

It was still early, just past eleven. Worried that Theodore might pick up on something, Teresa took a deep breath to steady herself before answering. “Theodore.”

Even though she tried to sound normal, a hint of something off slipped through.

Theodore didn’t call her out on it. He just asked, “It’s pretty late. Why aren’t you home yet? Monica’s been asking for you.”

Teresa’s heart ached. Her own daughter seemed to care less about her than her niece did. “Theodore, Yolanda’s sick. I’m staying with her tonight, but I’ll be home tomorrow,” Teresa said.

Theodore was clearly worried. Several times, he seemed about to speak but stopped himself. Finally, he said, “There’s a package for you at the door.”

Teresa suddenly remembered what Troy had said about the bracelet. “Could you sign for it for me?”

Okay,” Theodore replied.

Both of them went quiet on the line.

Teresa was about to end the call with something casual when Theodore spoke again, his voice filled with concern. “Teresa, tell me has Charles forced you into something?”

“No,” Teresa replied almost instantly. The arrangement she had with Charles didn’t really affect her. Yolanda was her daughter. It was her duty to take care of her.

Once again, neither of them said a word. In the end, it was Teresa who broke the silence and said she should hang up.

After hanging up, Teresa washed the wine glass and carefully placed it back in its spot. She stood there for a while, letting the night breeze cool her down before heading back upstairs.

But as soon as she turned around, she saw Charles standing not far away in his pajamas. His hair was freshly washed but he hadn’t bothered to dry it, so water was dripping from his hair.

Teresa jumped at the sight of him, but quickly regained her composure. “You’re still awake?she asked, her voice hoarse and noticeably colder.

Charles Logan fixed his gaze on her and replied blandly, Yes.

Teresa couldn’t read Charles, nor did she want to. “I’m going upstairs,” she said. With that, she stepped around him and left the kitchen.

“Wait,” Charles called after her, stopping her in her tracks.

Teresa paused, but didn’t bother to look back. Is there something else?she asked coolly.

Her mind was racing, imagining a scene playing out in her head. She guessed that Charles and Naomi probably couldn’t control themselves in the study earliermaybe something had happened between them. By now, Naomi was probably asleep, worn out.

Charles turned to face her and asked, “Is Yolanda feeling better?

“Yeah, she’s already asleep, Teresa replied. From the way Yolanda looked, she didn’t seem to have a cold, like Charles had said.

But whether it was a cold or not, Teresa wasn’t willing to take any chances. If Yolanda was really sick, she couldn’t just leave her.

Charles’s voice was still flat. “Alright.”

Teresa knew their conversation had pretty much run its course. If she stayed, it would just be more silence.

Jini as she was about to leave, Charles suddenly spoke again “It’s Grandpa’s birthday this weekend”

Teresa paused, only now remembering that Richard’s birthday was coming up

Chapter 66

Richard was the only one in the Logan family who had ever looked out for her. So, during all the years she had been married to Charles, Teresa had personally organized Richard’s birthday celebrations, handling everything herself.

She also arranged Zack’s birthday parties. But Richard’s birthday was always more intimate, only for family–no outsiders. Zack’s birthday was full of guests and friends.

No matter what Charles’s reminder was about, she didn’t care anymore. She would definitely prepare for Richard’s birthday, but she wouldn’t put in as much effort as she used to.

Teresa thought for a moment before saying, “Okay, I’ll make one dish.” She used to handle the whole menu herself, but this year, she only agreed to make a single dish.

In the past, Teresa always handled the gift, planning it well in advance. But this year, it had totally slipped her mind. After a few moments of silence, she said, “Let’s just get our own gifts.

“But…” Charles started, but Teresa didn’t want to hear another word from him. She just walked straight out of the kitchen. Without stopping, she headed upstairs.

Charles watched her walk away, his feelings all over the place.

He thought back to previous years when, no matter whose birthday it was, Teresa would always call him and ask what kind of gift to get. She’d offer a few options and always let him make the final decision.

But this year, she didn’t prepare anything, and even said they should just get their own gifts this time.

For a moment, Charles didn’t know what to do. In business, he was a powerhouse, but in life, he just couldn’t handle things as smoothly as Teresa did.

Soon enough, it was Richard’s birthday. Teresa had been busy admitting patients all day, and even when her shift was supposed to be over, she was still working.

Her phone kept buzzing in her bag, but she just didn’t have a spare second to pick up. By the time she finally finished up, it was already 6:30 PM.

After washing her hands and reaching for her phone, Teresa realized every missed call was from Charles.

She knew exactly what day it was–no way she’d forget–and it didn’t surprise her at all that Charles was blowing up her phone-

When she called him back, his voice was clearly irritated. “Where have you been?” He sounded like he was grilling her the moment he spoke.

Teresa answered coolly, “I was admitting patients.

Charles got even more annoyed. “Who’s more important, your patients or Grandpa’s birthday

Teresa didul hesitate. “My patients are more important.

Chapter 66

Of course, Richard meant a lot to her. During the five years she’d been married to Charles, she’d always remembered how kind Richard had been to her.

But if she had to choose, as a doctor, her patients came first.

Charles didn’t want to get into an argument with her. He just said, “I’ll be downstairs waiting for you.”

“Okay,” Teresa replied. After packing up her bag, Teresa grabbed the gift box she’d prepared.

When she got to the hospital entrance, she saw Charles’s Rolls Royce parked out front. Today, he wasn’t using a driver–he was behind the wheel himself.

Teresa hesitated for a moment before sliding into the back seat. If it had been before, she would’ve hopped into the front seat. But now, she just didn’t care about that anymore.
