When She Walks Away (Teresa) novel Chapter 95

When Teresa returned to the hospital with the cereal she had bought, Yolanda was scrolling through videos on Sharon’s phone. She was smiling from ear to ear.

Seeing Teresa come back, Sharon called out, “Miss Yolanda, Mrs. Logan is back.”

Yolanda quickly turned off the phone screen and sat up in bed. “Mom,” she said.

Teresa’s pajamas didn’t have a single dry spot left, but she was clutching the cereal protectively, afraid it might get cold or spill.

She handed the cereal to Sharon and said, “Sharon, could you feed Yolanda?”

Seeing Teresa soaked through, Sharon felt a pang of sadness. Her voice was a little hoarse as she said, “Mrs. Logan, why don’t you go change into something dry?”

Teresa nodded and didn’t say another word.

Yolanda saw that Teresa’s clothes were soaked and really wanted to ask if she was okay, but then she remembered how Teresa hadn’t even picked her up from school that afternoon.

Teresa had a change of clothes in the car, so she headed outside again.

But once she got to the car, she was so exhausted that she didn’t even want to move.

Leaning back against the seat, she closed her eyes. Liam’s words echoed in her mind, and the fact that Charles hadn’t brought Yolanda to the hospital made one thing obvious. He probably wasn’t even in Riverdale.

‘If he’s not here, then where did he go?‘ Teresa wondered.

The answer was almost too easy. Wherever Naomi was, that was where Charles would be.

But that was just a hunch. Teresa needed some actual evidence.

She grabbed her phone and searched for YatesDaily’s video channel.

Sure enough, there was a fresh upload.

She clicked in, and saw Charles walking in from the hallway, carrying flowers and fruit. Even though his face wasn’t shown, Teresa could tell it was him just by his outfit.

The caption said, “Whenever I need you, you always show up, no matter where you are. I’m so grateful to have you in my life. Thank you.”

Teresa let her phone drop onto the seat and buried her face in her hands.

What hurt her wasn’t that Charles had gone to see Naomi. It was that even when Yolanda was sick, he was still with Naomi.

Her chest felt so tight that she could barely breathe.

But thinking about it wouldn’t help, so she forced herself to get up and change.

Just as she finished changing, her phone lit up with a video call. It was not through WhatsApp, but a direct call. It was Charles calling.

Teresa hesitated for a second and then picked up.

Charles’s face appeared on the screen. “How is Yolanda? Is she feeling any better?” he asked.

Teresa’s voice was flat. “The doctor ran some tests and prescribed her some medicine. She’s much better now.”

Charles’s furrowed brow relaxed, and he let out a sigh of relief. “That’s good to hear.”

“Yeah, Teresa replied.

Charles added, “You’ve had a tough day”

Teresa didn’t want to hear his polite nonsense. “Gotta go, she cut him off.

Charles didn’t ask any further. He just answered, “Alright.”

As Teresa tapped the end call button, Charles’s voice came through again. “I’ll be back soon…”

She cut him off before he could finish.

She sat in the car for a little while longer, trying to pull herself together before heading back inside.

When she got to the hospital room, Yolanda had already finished her cereal.

As Teresa walked in, Yolanda just shot her a quick look and didn’t call out to her.

Yolanda was feeling much better now, but every time she remembered what happened earlier that day, she couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed.

So she kept her distance, refusing to talk to Teresa.

Teresa knew her inside out. She could tell Yolanda was still upset with her.

‘Fine, let her stay mad, Teresa thought. ‘I’ve got bigger things to worry about.

She was still feeling weak, so getting up wasn’t even on her mind. All she cared about was keeping some distance from Charles

Charles could see she was still weak, and without thinking, he reached out to her. But Teresa flinched.

He thought back to how things used to be. Whenever he was around, she’d always sneak into his arms.

But now, instead of getting close, she was staying as far away from him as she could.

Instead of letting go, Charles grabbed Teresa’s arm with a firm grip and yanked her straight into his embrace.

She was so weak that she couldn’t fight him off at all. He scooped her right up into his arms.

He leaned in, gently touching his forehead to hers.

After a few seconds, he let her go and said, “You’re still running a fever. Don’t work at the hospital today.”

Teresa inched away from him a bit more. She couldn’t stand the mix of cigarette smoke and a perfume that definitely wasn’t his.

“I can take care of myself,” Teresa said, her tone firm. “I’m working in the hospital. If anything happens, there are people there who’ll look after me.” She shot down Charles’s suggestion without a second thought.

Charles frowned at her words. He turned to her and just stared at her without saying a word.

Teresa could practically feel the annoyance coming off him, but she didn’t meet his eyes. Instead, she said, “You take Yolanda to school later.”

After a long pause, Charles finally said, “Okay.”

Teresa couldn’t get up, so she said, “Go wake her up.”

“Alright,” Charles replied.

After getting up, Charles sat on the edge of the bed and kept his eyes on Teresa for a moment.

Feeling uneasy under his gaze, Teresa finally asked, “What’s wrong?”

Charles reached out and slid his hand under her clothes.

Teresa instantly pulled her clothes tight around herself, glaring at him. “Charles, what are you doing?“”
