You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 127

After two hours of trying on clothes and getting measured, Patricia was finally done. The sun was setting outside, filling the room with a soft golden glow.

She collapsed onto the couch and let out a long sigh. Marian came over with a cup of tea, her smile never fading.

“Here, have some tea and take a break,” Marian said gently.

Patricia took the cup and sipped. “Dinner’s still a while away. Why don’t you go upstairs and rest for a bit? I’ll call you when it’s ready.”

Marian nodded, took her tea, and headed into the study.

Patricia sat down at the desk, feeling like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She finished her tea and was about to open her laptop to skim through the Martin Group’s recent financial reports when the phone on the desk rang.

“Ma’am, Mr. Martin’s secretary is here. He says he needs to speak with you.”

“I’ll be right down,” Patricia replied, not wanting to keep anyone from Oliver’s side waiting. If his secretary was here in person, it had to be important.

She went downstairs and saw Lincoln sitting in the living room with a tablet. When he noticed her, he stood up.

They’d met a few times before, especially during her last days in Toronto. He was always stopping by the house for meetings with Oliver. Not exactly close, but not strangers either.

“Lincoln,” Patricia greeted him with a polite nod.

Lincoln unlocked the tablet and handed it to her. “Mr. Martin asked me to show you these profiles.”

Patricia took a seat and started scrolling through the summaries on the tablet. None of the candidates stood out as amazing, but none were completely average either. In today’s corporate world, they were solid—reliable.

She looked at Lincoln, confused. “What’s this for?”

“Mr. Martin said that now you’re coming back to Martin Group, you’ll need your own people. He picked these candidates himself—they’re talented, but won’t attract too much attention.”

Patricia understood right away. With her situation in the company, Emerson would definitely be keeping a close eye on her. Even if she joined the second planning department, the people Emerson assigned would probably be the worst of the bunch, handpicked to trip her up.
