You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 149

Patricia got back to Cloud Peak earlier than usual that evening. After a long shower, she washed off her makeup and pulled on her favorite loungewear—an ivory cardigan over a silky, loose-fitting dress that made her feel right at home.

In the kitchen, Marian was chopping up bright red chili peppers, moving so quickly and confidently that even the sound of her knife was calming. Patricia leaned against the doorway, just watching, feeling oddly at peace.

“You should go relax! Why are you staring at me cook?” Marian called out, grinning as she glanced up.

“Watching you cook is relaxing too,” Patricia said, a gentle smile playing on her lips.

Marian laughed, shaking her head. “There are so many rules at Cloud Peak. If Johns sees you hanging out in here with me, he’ll probably complain. Back at the old place, I treated you like my own daughter—none of this fuss. But here, everything’s different.”

Someone like Marian wasn’t supposed to be in the main house at all. The only reason she was here was because Patricia insisted.

“Why would he say anything?” Patricia frowned.

“I’m not really considered trusted staff. Rich people care a lot about privacy. Only people they trust are allowed in,” Marian explained, never missing a beat with her chopping.

Patricia scrunched up her nose. “Then just take care of me. Forget about them.”

“So, what, let them go hungry?” Marian teased.

Patricia was about to reply when suddenly a warm hand landed on her waist, and a familiar voice spoke right next to her ear.

She turned around to see Oliver standing there, his eyes filled with concern. “Who’s making you upset?” he asked quietly.

Patricia felt her cheeks flush. “No one. Why are you home so early?”

“Nothing much going on today, so I figured I’d come back early,” Oliver said casually. He glanced over at Marian’s cutting board—it looked like a crime scene of chili peppers. Anyone who couldn’t handle spice would be terrified.
