Jackson flopped down next to them, game controller in hand, ready to tune out the world. But the second Chelsea started wailing, he ditched his squad mid-match and opened up his gossip app to see what all the fuss was about.
When he scrolled through eighty-nine pages of screenshots and drama, he practically shouted, “Are you kidding me?” Everyone nearby turned to stare.
He shoved his phone into Patricia’s hands, eyes wide. Then he leaned over to the next table, swapping gossip with whoever would listen.
Patricia finished reading the endless slides and just stared into space, completely speechless. She opened her mouth a few times, but nothing came out.
“So… what are you going to do now?” she finally managed.
“How am I supposed to know?” Chelsea sobbed, tears streaming down her face. “I’m basically orphaned at this point. My advisor’s gone, and did the professor’s wife even think about how this would ruin my work? Honestly, what am I supposed to do now?”
Chelsea looked absolutely crushed. She started tossing back drinks, one after another. The bartender, clearly feeling sorry for her, kept refilling her glass without being asked.
When she hit her fifth drink, Patricia reached over and stopped him. “She’s had enough, thanks.”
Chelsea sniffled. “But I’m miserable…”
“Why is it always me who gets screwed over?” she wailed. The people around her joined in, eating up every detail of the drama.
Someone even leaned in closer, eager for more gossip. Soon, everyone was chatting and laughing, slapping the table in disbelief. Who knew academic drama could be even juicier than celebrity scandals?
Meanwhile, over at Cloud Peak Estate, Oliver finished his glass of water and walked out of his room, searching the living room for any sign of Patricia.
He picked up the house phone and called Johns.
After a brief pause, Johns answered, sounding nervous. “Madam… went out.”
Oliver’s expression darkened. His voice was sharp. “Where did she go?”
She’s not even that young, but she runs off every time she gets upset?
“She didn’t say, sir.”
