You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 154

“Life isn’t just black and white,” Joe said, his eyes lingering on Patricia, a relaxed smile still on his lips. “Ms. Martin, you get that better than anyone.”

Those words—life isn’t just black and white—flashed through Patricia’s mind. Out of nowhere, she remembered an afternoon in her last year of high school.

Was he that person?

“Pattie.” The deep, steady voice came from behind her.

Patricia’s shoulders tensed on instinct.

She turned, slow and unsure, to see Oliver standing behind her in a fitted black t-shirt.

He was backlit by the warm glow of a streetlamp, his sharp features softened by the light. The shirt outlined his broad shoulders and trim waist. One hand was in his pocket, the other held a cigarette, smoke curling up in the air.

He watched her closely, his gaze flicking between her and Joe. There was something predatory in his eyes, calm on the surface but dangerous underneath.

“What are you doing here?” she asked quietly.

“I came to get you.” Oliver glanced at Chelsea, who was slumped on Patricia’s shoulder. His brows drew together, a slight frown.

“Aiden,” he called, low and steady.

Aiden stepped up and lifted Chelsea, who was completely out of it, and carried her to the car.

Before Patricia could say anything, a big hand appeared in front of her.

She looked down, then rested her fingers in his.

Oliver took a slow drag from his cigarette, the corners of his mouth lifting in a smile that was equal parts genuine and unreadable.

“Patricia!” Joe finally snapped out of his daze, Oliver’s presence hitting him all at once.

He called her name before he could stop himself, curiosity burning in his eyes. Who was this guy?

Everyone knew Patricia’s company shares were tied to marriage. Was this her husband? The man in front of him radiated power and authority, impossible to ignore.

Patricia stopped, glancing back at Joe with a faint smile. “Mr. Keeble, I don’t think we’re on a first-name basis just yet.”
