Patricia was at a loss for words.
This was Aurora’s big plan?
She shot Aurora a look, her eyes cool and sharp. Aurora just avoided her gaze, pretending to be interested in anything else.
Whatever. As long as it got Ruby to show up in that dress, any method was worth it.
The more Ruby listened, the darker her expression got.
She was never as pretty as Patricia. People had said that since they were kids. Patricia’s parents were basically local celebrities for their looks. Ruby couldn’t change that, no matter what she did. The comparisons only stopped after Patricia’s accident left her with a limp. She never thought, after all these years, she’d hear it again.
Ruby glared at Patricia, anger simmering in her eyes. “Keep your people in line. If they’re so bored, maybe you should give them more work.”
Aurora just shrugged, totally unbothered. “Wasn’t me being nosy. Your team started it, gossiping about how Mr. Martin’s ex-husband was your childhood sweetheart. That was a show.”
She flashed a smile, her words hitting everyone in the room. “Let’s be real, people always defend themselves. I just said what everyone can see. Beauty isn’t exactly a secret. Maybe your team should worry about themselves for once.”
Patricia rubbed her temples. This girl has guts.
“Enough,” she said, her voice steady and cool, cutting Aurora off.
She led her team out and left the drama behind.
As soon as they got back to her office, Patricia opened a drawer and tossed a hairbrush at Aurora. “Are you trying to rip all your hair out?”
Aurora grabbed the brush, wincing as she tugged it through her hair. “Don’t even start. My poor hair can’t take it.”
“But I did exactly what you asked, didn’t I?”
“You hurt them, but you almost hurt yourself too. Was it worth it?”
Aurora shot her a wink. “I know I’m awesome. Try not to fall for me, okay?”
Sure enough, by lunchtime, Ruby stormed out of the office and headed straight for an upscale spa.
