You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 193

“I meant every word,” Ruby shot back, refusing to back down.

There was a time when their families were inseparable. After Patricia’s parents passed away, the bond between them got even stronger. Ruby could still remember the times when Kelly would squeeze her hand and say she’d love to see Ruby become her daughter-in-law someday.

But promises that once felt so special clearly didn’t mean much. Kelly could say those sweet things to anyone, it seemed. The irony stung.

“So what if the Martin family’s daughter can’t get into your precious Newton family? Someone else made it in, didn’t they?”

“The Newtons can turn on their own savior without a second thought. What am I to you? Just a childhood friend, no heroic deeds, just feelings. Of course I don’t matter.”

“Don’t worry, Mrs. Phipps. I wouldn’t want to join your family if you paid me.”

Anger smoldered in Ruby’s chest. Being played by Patricia was bad enough. Now Kelly had to insult her too?

She let out a sharp laugh and turned to leave, but Kelly just glanced down at her nails and scoffed. “Wow, I thought you had more backbone than this.”

“That’s really all you’ve got?”

“Just another wannabe, thinking she belongs with the rich and famous? Your whole life’s a knockoff—fake clothes, fake dreams. What else about you is fake? When Patricia joined the Martins, the only thing I didn’t like was feeling like I owed her something. Otherwise, she was perfect. But you…”

Kelly paused, letting her words hang in the air. “You can’t even hold a candle to Patricia. Not even close.”

“Talent, ambition, looks, elegance, even your figure—she beats you in every way.”

Kelly knew just how to hit where it hurt. She’d seen Ruby peeking from behind curtains, eyes full of envy as Patricia lit up every room. She’d seen Ruby flaunt Patricia’s hand-me-downs, pretending they were high fashion. Ruby had even squeezed her feet into shoes a size too small, just because they used to be Patricia’s, willing to put up with pain all day just to keep up appearances.

All that effort, all for show. What could she possibly achieve?

Kelly wanted her words to be a slap in the face, to crush any hope Ruby had of ever joining the Newtons. Her cold stare cut deep.

Me? Ruby sneered, stepping right up to Kelly.
