“I found the guy you asked about—Greg. Used to go to Riverdale Sports College, but he dropped out three years ago. No clue why, just left before finishing.”
“Why are you looking into him?” The man on the other end sounded confused.
Ruby, still in her evening dress, sprawled out on the couch, holding up the photo and studying it like she was analyzing a masterpiece. It was a pretty risqué shot, but she looked at it the way some people admire art.
After a while, she mumbled, “He’s actually kind of cute.”
“He is. What, you got your eye on him now?”
“Please. Someone I know ran into him, that’s all. I was just curious.”
“Alright, I’m hanging up,” Ruby said and ended the call.
She headed into her study, turned on the printer, and made a stack of copies of the photo—just in case she needed them. As the printer hummed away, a slow smile crept onto her face.
It was getting late. By the time she’d left the ballroom, it was already ten. After getting home, taking a long shower, and winding down a bit, it was practically morning by the time she finally crashed.
Newton Estate sat in the best part of Riverdale. From the balcony in the master bedroom, you could see endless green hills rolling out in every direction.
Kelly sat on her bed with her phone, staring at the name on the screen. She couldn’t help but laugh.
She used to think Ruby was so above it all. When Theo got married, Ruby had looked shattered, running off overseas like she was heartbroken. But in reality, she’d barely waited a beat before finding someone new. Honestly, she rebounded faster than Theo ever did.
Kelly set her phone aside, then dialed another number. “I can get you in touch with Ruby.”
That night, Patricia came home to Cloud Peak. Oliver was still up, sitting in his study, buried in paperwork.
Patricia knocked on the door. “I’m back.”
