3:30 in the morning.
The master bedroom at Cloud Peak was dark and still, the only sounds Patricia could make out were the quiet breaths beside her and the faint splash of water from the bathroom.
Her phone started buzzing on the nightstand. Patricia was so wiped out she couldn’t even work up the energy to reach for it. She barely had time to move before someone pressed the phone to her ear.
Jackson’s voice came through on the line, steady as always. “Miss, Ruby’s in the hospital.”
Patricia forced herself to focus, but her voice was still low and rough from the night. “Hm?”
Jackson acted like he didn’t notice. “She got buried by a dump truck. By the time they pulled her out, she wasn’t breathing.”
Patricia didn’t want the details. “And?”
“A doctor on his way home saved her. She’s at the hospital now.”
Patricia pushed herself up a little. “What about the driver?”
Jackson glanced at the unconscious man sprawled in his back seat. “We’ve got him.”
“Do you need me to come over?”
She’d barely finished the question when Oliver’s expression tightened. He took the phone from her, his voice suddenly cool and not at all happy. “I’ll send Colton over. Where are you?”
Jackson paused for a second. “On Qinghua Road.”
Oliver hung up and switched on a bedside lamp, then knelt next to Patricia, running his hand gently through her hair. “Is there anything you need to tell me?”
He sounded soft, but his face said otherwise.
Patricia shook her head. “Jackson knows what to do.”
“Alright. Get some sleep.”
Outside, the night dragged on. Jackson parked on Qinghua Road, staring at the phone after the abrupt hang-up. He looked over at Aiden. “Did you hear that? He sounded pissed.”
“Of course he’s pissed. You dragged his wife out in the middle of the night. What did you think would happen?”
Jackson frowned. “What do you mean, I dragged her out? Wasn’t this what we agreed on?”
Aiden rolled his eyes. “Yeah, but you shouldn’t have called this late. She’s not single like us.”
