Seeing that Germain had made up his mind, Raven reluctantly said, “If you insist on doing this, I suggest the assassins disguise themselves as Madison’s own people, here to rescue her. But Adelaide is personally leading the escort. It won’t be easy to kill or rescue anyone on her watch.”
“We have to try.” Germain hadn’t been able to sleep well lately, and he looked much older and
more worn out.
He added, “First, find out the exact time of the escort. Ten people should be enough. Since we can’t use Madison’s people right now, use Silverlight members to gather information.”
Raven nodded. “Alright.”
By the next evening, the Ministry of Justice had finalized the escort plans.
They had initially planned to use a prison wagon but decided instead to use unmarked vehicles to transport Madison, keeping her out of public view.
Adelaide was leading the detail herself, with thirty members of the Capital Guard providing escort. Ellen was leading the way.
As dusk fell, the sky darkened. The cold wind wasn’t biting, but it was colder than during the day. Winter was closing in.
The vehicles left the Ministry of Justice. Ellen rode his motorcycle ahead to clear the path.
Adelaide rode her own motorcycle alongside the cars.
Capital Guard members were positioned around the vehicles–front, back, and sides—in a tight formation.
Since they weren’t using a prison wagon, the public didn’t know what the large convoy was for.
The hottest topics of discussion lately, besides Madison’s treason case, were Luna Adelaide’s new role as Commander of the Ironthorn Army.
Someone recognized her and gasped. “That’s Gamma Adelaide! I’ve seen her before!”
“Really? Wow, she looks so powerful!”

“It’s the first time a she–wolf has held such a high office!”
“She’s even fought on the battlefield!”

“But she’s really… ah, I don’t even know how to describe it! I’m not educated enough to find the words! She’s just so beautiful and so powerful. I’ve never seen an official who looks this good!”
“Who is in those cars? Why is the escort so big?”
The loud chatter of the crowd drowned out the wind, reaching Adelaide’s ears, but she paid it no mind.
Her eyes were sharp, listening for any unusual sounds.
They passed Swallow Stone Street. The Detention Center was just three miles ahead.
Adelaide knew that if anyone was going to make a move, it would happen right after they crossed this street.
Just as they drove out of Swallow Stone Street, the gland on the back of Adelaide’s neck suddenly burned.
Her cedarwood scent uncontrollably leaked out. The air was thick with a dangerous mix of rust and rot. It was so strong that her wolf let out a warning growl in her mind.
She knew this scent too well. The night the Blood Moon Pack was attacked, the invaders were wrapped in the same stench, a smell that clung to them like a parasite.
Her mentor, Irene, had told her where these people came from: they were rogues who climbed out of piles of corpses. Every one of them had blood on their claws that would never wash off.
Even if they were swift fighters, they always carried the smell of death and decay.
It was a scent most werewolves couldn’t detect, but one that instantly alerted a high–ranking Alpha.
“All hands on alert!” Adelaide’s voice, wrapped in her Alpha aura, cut through the wind. Silver- blue vertical pupils flashed in her eyes.
The escort detail instantly stiffened. Their palms completed a partial shift: cold, silvery wolf claws tore through skin. Sulphur and Ironthorn scent combined, forming a defensive barrier in the air. Everyone gripped their weapons, their wolf ears twitching for any movement.
As they reached an intersection, a sharp clanging sound cut through the air.
