“Mr. Rogers?”

Jude’s brows drew together in an instant. His eyes flicked around the room until they landed on Elvis, who was sitting calmly on the couch by the wall.

The sight jolted Jude fully awake. He stared at the man by his bed in disbelief. “So you woke me up just because he showed up?”

“Mr. Rogers wants a word with you.” The man’s face remained blank as he spoke, then stepped aside, completely ignoring Jude’s furious glare.

Jude actually let out a short, incredulous laugh.

He shut his eyes, making it clear he had no interest in talking to Elvis.

But time ticked by, and Elvis still hadn’t said a word.

It was Jude who finally lost his patience.

He opened his eyes again, turning his head with some effort to glare at Elvis. “Did you come here just to gloat?”

“Honestly, it is pretty laughable.” Elvis’s tone was ice-cold.

Jude took a deep breath, fighting a cough before he managed, “Well, you’ve had your fun now. Can you leave?”

Being this helpless in front of Elvis was humiliating.

“Jude.” Elvis stared at him, voice frigid. “Winona saved you because she’s kind. She couldn’t stand the thought of someone dying right in front of her. If it had been anyone else—so long as they weren’t her enemy—she would’ve done the same.”

Jude blinked, then let out a derisive snort. “So you’re here to warn me not to get any ideas? That I shouldn’t think I mean something special to Winona?”

“And another thing,” Elvis added. “Don’t use this as an opportunity to pull any tricks.”

Jude’s reputation was far from spotless. Who knew what he’d try, given the chance.

If Jude wanted to go up against him, fine. Elvis would gladly oblige. But if he tried to drag Winona into it, Elvis wouldn’t allow that for a second.

“You—” Jude was nearly shaking with anger. “Whatever you think of me, I know right from wrong—”

Elvis’s lips curled in a mocking smile.

“From the messes you’ve made before, that’s not exactly obvious.”
