Celia felt absolutely wretched inside. She took a shaky breath. “I just wanted to ask you for a favor—did you really have to say all that?”

Jude’s reply was sharp. “Instead of begging me for help, maybe you should focus on keeping Tyson on a leash for once, so he’ll stop pestering Winona.”

Celia was so angry she was trembling. “How am I supposed to do that? I’m not as lucky as Winona…”

“Lucky?” Jude cut her off, voice rising. “You call her lucky? She wasted five years on a worthless man, worked herself sick just to keep his company afloat, and all the while he was sneaking around with another woman behind her back. He even slept with her. Then she gets in a car accident and loses the use of her leg—do you want that kind of ‘luck’?”

Celia shuddered. “C-car accident? How do you know about that?”

“I had someone look into her past. Why—what are you so nervous about?” Jude’s tone turned icy. “Celia, don’t tell me you had something to do with that crash?”

“Don’t be ridiculous!” Celia cried out. “What does her accident have to do with me? It was just an accident—nothing more!”

Jude couldn’t see, but on the other end of the line, Celia’s face was ghostly pale.

“It better not have been,” he said, voice low.

“Young Master Quincy, what’s gotten into you?” Celia’s nerves were fraying fast. “Why do you suddenly care so much about her? You two barely even know each other!”

“That’s none of your business. Listen to me, Celia—if it’s money, connections, status you want, I can help. But if you go after Winona again, don’t blame me for what happens next.”

As his words fell, Celia heard someone in the background reminding Jude it was time to change his bandages.

She didn’t even get a chance to respond before he hung up without hesitation.

The hospital room was comfortably warm, but Celia felt frozen to her core.

She couldn’t reach Eamon. Jude was out of the question. And Tyson… all he could think about now was how to get back together with Winona.
