“It’s nothing much—my husband and I just aren’t getting along. We’re planning to get a divorce,” Sue said lightly, brushing it off as if it were nothing.
But the events of that night had left a scar she still carried deep inside her. She had no desire to bring them up again.
Yvonne took the hint and didn’t pry further. If things had reached the point of divorce, it had to be something serious. If Sue didn’t want to talk about it, it would be rude to push.
“Ms. Sue, are you really moving back home?” Lucy looked up at her with wide eyes. “That’s so nice! I wish I could go back too. I don’t like it here—it’s not home. I want my dad. I miss him.”
No sooner had the words left her mouth than Yvonne quickly covered her daughter’s lips, scolding her in a sharp whisper, “Lucy, don’t say things like that!”
Lucy’s face crumpled in hurt, and her eyes brimmed with tears.
Sue jumped in, trying to smooth things over. “Oh, she’s just a kid. It’s only natural she misses her dad…”
Yvonne gave an awkward smile, her expression tense and conflicted.
Winona, sitting quietly off to the side, took it all in. She watched Yvonne closely, her fingers tightening in her lap.
So Yvonne knew more than she let on. At the very least, she must know something about that car crash all those years ago. Otherwise, why would she run off to another country with her daughter? And why act so nervous every time Lucy mentioned her father?
No wonder, Sue had said, that Yvonne’s little bistro never seemed to have customers, yet money was never a problem for her. Back then, when Celia paid off that driver, it must have cost a fortune. Tyson’s cover-up would have taken money too. The money Yvonne spent now was likely what she’d gotten in exchange for all the pain and trauma she’d suffered.
“It’s rare to run into someone from back home overseas,” Sue said with a sigh. “Especially out in the middle of nowhere like this. The folks in that town are friendly, but… they’re not people we really know.”
