A Vow of Deception, A Vow of Revenge novel Chapter 26

"I didn't…" Winona started to explain instinctively.

It struck her then—ever since she'd met Elvis, he might not have been the most tender man, but he'd always treated her with courtesy and kindness. The only times he ever seemed upset were when he thought she wasn't taking care of her health.

She hesitated, then continued, "I'm not risking my life for anyone. The project I'm handling is just wrapping up, and there are some loose ends I need to take care of. I want to see it through—that's my responsibility, not just to myself, but to everyone on my team who's worked so hard alongside me. Besides…"

Winona lowered her gaze and said softly, "Once this project is over, I'm resigning."

Elvis's expression seemed to soften.

He looked like he wanted to say more, but Winona cut in gently, "I promise, I'm fine. What happened this morning was just… a personal issue. I'm really feeling much better now."

It felt a bit odd to be explaining all this to Elvis, but seeing the concern etched on his face, she couldn't help but want to reassure him.

Elvis frowned slightly, but when he saw her earnestness, he relented and respected her wishes.

"Come on. Let's get in the car."

The drive to Goodwin Enterprises passed in silence. Elvis kept his eyes on the road, and Winona stared out the window, lost in thought.

It wasn't until they were almost at Goodwin Enterprises that she finally spoke, "Mr. Rogers, thank you again for saving me this morning. And for the wonderful breakfast—I really appreciate it. When I'm back in the Capital, let me take you out to dinner."

She knew a meal wasn't nearly enough to repay the favor, but saying too much now would only sound insincere. She'd find a way to properly thank him once she was back in the Capital.

"When are you heading back?" Elvis asked.

"The fifteenth of next month."

Elvis nodded calmly. "That's a coincidence—I'll be heading back that day too. Let's go together."

"You're leaving on the fifteenth as well?" Winona was surprised. Elvis was supposed to be in Seastone City for business—was the trip really going to last that long?

He nodded. "My private jet leaves from Seastone City Airport at noon on the fifteenth. Just head straight to the airport that day."

Winona was about to protest, but Elvis added, "Even if you weren't coming, my flight would still be leaving that day for the Capital. Giving you a ride doesn't inconvenience me at all, so you don't owe me anything."

With him putting it like that, Winona couldn't refuse.

"All right. I'll be there on time. Thank you, Mr. Rogers."

Just as she finished speaking, the car pulled up in front of the Goodwin Enterprises building.

Winona thanked Elvis, said goodbye, and stepped out.

Elvis watched her walk into the towering glass building before telling the driver to go. As the car merged into traffic, he pulled out his phone and made a call.
