Winona watched Tyson, so sure of himself, and the storm of anger that had overwhelmed her heart suddenly subsided.
Hadn't she already seen through this man? What was there left to be disappointed about?
If he wanted to hand the project to Celia, so be it.
But she doubted Celia could handle it anyway.
Tyson seemed to notice her abrupt calm, and his expression softened. He stood, came over, and took her icy hand in his.
"Nona, as your brother-in-law, it's only right for us to look after your sister, isn't it?"
Winona pulled her hand free, her features cold and distant. "If you say so, then I suppose you're right."
Tyson's brow furrowed, clearly displeased by her attitude.
But since she'd dropped the subject of the project lead, he let it go. Instead, he added, "Celia's just taken on this project. She's inexperienced, and she'll need your help to get up to speed."
Not long ago, he'd been so sanctimonious, insisting he was worried about Winona's health, afraid she'd overwork herself.
Now here he was, asking her to help Celia.
Winona's eyes flashed with open sarcasm. Tyson coughed awkwardly, searching for a change of topic. "You went to the doctor today—was everything alright? Nothing serious, I hope?"
His belated concern didn't stir even a ripple in Winona's heart. If anything, it only made her feel more contempt.
"I'm fine," she replied flatly. "I'll be heading out."
Tyson watched her retreating figure, a vague sense of unease rising in his chest.
But that discomfort was quickly interrupted as Celia breezed in.
"Tyson, Miss Thorne isn't upset, is she?" Celia asked, approaching him with exaggerated caution.
"She's fine," Tyson reassured her with a gentle smile. "Don't worry about it. Nona's always been sensible."
"Isn't it obvious? It's a welcome party for Miss Goodwin."
"Who is she, anyway? She's got the same last name as Mr. Goodwin—are they related?"
"No way. The way they look at each other, there's no way they're family. There's something going on there, trust me. I bet it's just a coincidence they have the same name."
"So she's Mr. Goodwin's girlfriend? I always thought Mr. Goodwin and Miss Thorne were together…"
"Really? If they were a couple, it would've been public by now."
The office group chat was buzzing with gossip.
Winona glanced over the messages, her face unreadable.
Celia had been there less than a day, and already everyone in the executive office could sense the not-so-subtle chemistry between her and Tyson.
