After Divorce, I Returned as the Army's Queen novel Chapter 141

Chloe was shocked. A nearby officer quickly came over and pulled Kevin up to his feet.

Chloe made a gesture to the officer before saying to Kevin, "Speak your mind. You don't need to get on your knees."

Kevin chuckled bitterly.

Speak his mind? No one had believed him all those years ago when he had. They'd all thought he was rambling nonsense.

Even when he'd gotten on his knees and begged those people to investigate the truth behind the fire, they'd ignored him and even kicked him out!

His father, Bernard Lowe, had passed away a long time ago, and it wasn't like he could come back from the dead and clear his name.

But Kevin knew Bernard had been innocent.

"Everyone claimed that my dad was the one who caused that fire in Cloudrion. They said he'd been smoking, and the cigarette butt sparked the fire, which turned into an uncontrollable raging inferno afterward.

"But he'd sworn to me that he'd quit smoking. I know my dad was a man of his word, so he couldn't have been the person who caused that fire!" Kevin said.

Chloe's brows knitted together. She'd compiled sources of information and reports about that fire years ago, so naturally she knew that the fire department had determined a lit cigarette stub was the cause of the fire.

Since Bernard had been the first casualty in the fire, based on all evidence gathered, the fire department had concluded that his cigarette stub had sparked the fire.

"Even if he promised you that he'd quit smoking, there's no guarantee that he didn't just give in to temptation afterward," Chloe said.

"No!" Kevin cried. "My dad always kept the promises he made to me! Besides, the doctors found ground-glass nodules in his lungs. They couldn't operate on them because of where the nodules were located.

"After that, my dad swore he wouldn't touch another cigarette because he wanted to live longer and watch me grow up!"

Kevin began to choke up as he neared the end of his speech. "Please, Ms. Quall. Please help clear my dad's name. I don't want him to have to bear the shame of a crime he isn't guilty of even in death!"

Chloe couldn't help but think of her own situation as she looked at Kevin.

That fire all those years ago might have had something to do with Daniel's disappearance too. Though there was no concrete evidence at hand, the fact was that Daniel had lost all contact with her right after that fire.

If the fire hadn't started because of Bernard, then who could've been behind it?

Chloe really wanted to find out the truth too.

"Alright, I'll look into it. But I might not be able to give you the results you're hoping for," Chloe said.

After all, it had been five years since the incident. Even if there had been any other evidence, it might have gotten lost or destroyed over time.

Plus, it would be more difficult to find answers to a lot of things since Bernard was dead.

Tears streaked down Kevin's face. "Thank you… Thank you…" he choked out.

Chloe was the only person who'd genuinely offered him help so far. How could he not be grateful to her?

When Chloe left the visitation room, she saw Brian waiting outside for her.

"Did you see Kevin?" Brian asked.

Chloe nodded. "He says Bernard couldn't have caused the fire five years ago. After Bernard found out that he had nodules in his lungs, he promised Kevin he'd quit smoking.

"So, Kevin firmly believes that Bernard stopped smoking afterward and couldn't have possibly caused that fire."

Something glinted in Brian's eyes. "Are you going to help Kevin uncover the truth then?"

"Yes," Chloe replied. "Plus, I keep having this feeling that the fire is related to Daniel's disappearance. I'd originally thought to investigate the matter anyway, so now I can help Kevin uncover the truth too."

"I'll help you," Brian said.

"Alright." Chloe didn't refuse him. After all, with another person helping out, it would only increase the possibility of discovering more useful information.

"Why don't I help Clo instead?" Ethan's voice suddenly rang out in the hall.
