Chloe was caught off guard. The next second, Brian pulled her into a fierce embrace.

“Chloe, you can’t lie to me!” he choked out. “This is a promise. Since you’ve said it, you can’t take your words back or regret them.”

She lifted a hand, trying to soothe the man clinging to her like a bear. “I won’t take it back after saying it. I won’t regret it either. Brian, I love you.”

Her words were like music to Brian’s ears.

He’d thought last night was just the heavens taking pity on him.

Even if she’d only been swayed for a moment or acted out of pity for him, he would’ve gladly accepted it. He would do anything as long as it drew her closer to him or made her need him

more.

But now she had said she loved him. Just how lucky could he be?

“Chloe…” he murmured her name over and over, tightening his arms around her.

He needed to feel she was real and that this wasn’t a dream.

Chloe chided him, cupping his tear–streaked face. “You told me not to cry, but look at you now.

“I’m just too happy,” he said. “I never knew I could feel this happy.”

As though his joy spread to her, she smiled and wiped his tears. “From now on, let’s both be happy. When I find Daniel, I’ll tell him you’re the man I chose and the one I love.”

Brian’s eyes flickered. He dropped his gaze, hiding the flash of diffidence in his eyes.

“I went to the base today and got the drone Daniel used before his accident.” Chloe went on. “I watched some of the saved footage in the SD card and heard his voice… That’s why I cried.”

His arms around her tightened. “Did you find anything useful?”

Sadness flashed in her eyes. “It confirmed that his disappearance is indeed tied to the fire at the border. The military seems to believe that he’s most likely gone-”

“Your brother isn’t dead!” Brian blurted out.

Chloe was stunned.

As if sensing something, Brian caught himself and continued, “I mean–I believe in him. He’s your brother. I don’t think he’d go down so easily. He must still be alive.”

Because as long as Daniel was alive, there was still a way for Brian and Chloe to be together.

“Yeah…” she said. “He must still be alive.”

Brian pressed his lips together. “I had someone look into Sonya and Bernard. The results were interesting, to say the least.”

He handed Chloe a file from the coffee table.

“Five years ago, Sonya used to smoke. She wasn’t a heavy smoker, but she occasionally smoked at parties and when she was under pressure. But after that fire five years ago, she completely quit. No one’s seen her smoke since then.

“And that time, she was assigned to fly to the border with Bernard and bring back stranded compatriots. It was a stressful and dangerous assignment. After all, things had been unstable

at the borders.

“People even saw her smoking during the layover in Cloudrion.”

Chloe let Brian brief her as she flipped through the papers. The clues all seemed to point at

Sonya.

“The Steele family has specialized high–precision computer and repair equipment, right?”

She turned toward Brian. “I’d like to borrow it to restore a video.”

“Anything of mine is yours to use,” he said.

Warmth filled her chest. “Thank you.”

“Chloe, you don’t need to thank me,” he murmured.

If anything, he feared he still wasn’t giving her enough to make her stay.

Ethan lounged on a barstool, sipping wine languidly from his glass. At the next table, a man had his arm around a woman, laughing at whatever she whispered.

If Sonya had been there, she would’ve recognized the man immediately. It was Peter Lawson, the private detective who’d been blackmailing her.

“Mr. Lawson, you’re so generous tonight,” the woman in his arms purred. “What’s the occasion?”

“Good news, of course.” Peter grinned. “I’m about to make a fortune. If you keep me happy later, you’ll get a big tip.”

“Aw, thank you, Mr. Lawson,” she said sweetly, pouring him more drinks. “But what’s the good news? Tell me.”
