After knowing Who She Is They Kneeled novel Chapter 36

Chapter 36 Could She Be Ana?

Annelise looked up, following the sound of the voice.

On the hospital bed, Antonio was awake, his eyes sharp and vibrant, untouched by the frailty of age.

They carried a seasoned gravitas, the kind forged in the crucible of high-stakes business battles, something ordinary men could never possess.

Stephan was a businessman too, but in terms of sheer charisma, he couldn’t hold a candle to the old man before her. Though Antonio hadn’t fully recovered, his voice resonated with a commanding dignity, steady and authoritative.

Beside him sat yesterday’s striking patient, his long legs crossed casually.

Without his suit, he looked a little fragile, almost decadent in his beauty. His hands, resting on his knee, were slender, with elegantly defined knuckles that spoke of quiet grace.

He was playing chess with Antonio, and when Annelise entered, he offered her a faint, fleeting smile.

She returned a polite nod.

Setting down her black bag, she approached Antonio, her tone calm and professional. “No need to call me your sav- ior, Sir. Treating patients is just what doctors do.”

As Antonio’s gaze settled on Annelise’s strikingly beautiful face, the chess piece in his hand froze midair.

She looked so much like his beloved wife in her youth.

If he hadn’t been consumed with building his empire back then, his wife might never have left Brookford for Stroacia.

Lost in thought, Antonio couldn’t tear his eyes away from Annelise’s face.

A bold suspicion sparked in his mind. With such a striking resemblance to his wife, could this girl be his long-lost granddaughter, Ana?

His heart raced with excitement, and he couldn’t help but blurt out, “Dr. Caldwell, are you from Criford? Have you ever been to Brookford?”

His fingers tightened around the chess piece, his eyes brimming with anticipation.

Adrian, ever perceptive, sensed something was afoot. His attention shifted, his gaze locking onto the scene.

Annelise set her bag down, avoiding Antonio’s eyes, her voice cool and measured. “Yes, I’m a local. Haven’t left Cri- ford yet. I’ve only heard about Brookford. People say it’s quite a sight.”

She flashed a small smile. “One day, I’ll take my grandma there for a visit.”

Chapter 30 Goulu Sne de Angi

There was no need to air her family’s dirty laundry to patients. Besides, to maintain the mystique of her Dr. Miracle persona, she always kept personal details close to the chest.

Antonio had braced himself for disappointment, but her answer still stung. The chess piece slipped from his fingers, his mood visibly dimming. He steadied himself before speaking. “My mistake, Dr. Caldwell. Don’t mind me.”

“It’s fine,” Annelise said, softening at the sight of his sadness. After a moment’s thought, she added, “Sir Caldwell, you’ve got a wonderful family. I’m sure the heavens will guide Ms. Ana safely back to you.”

Her words lifted Antonio’s spirits, and he sat up straighter, a warm smile breaking through. “Thank you, Dr. Caldwell. I hope so too.”

Seeing his mood brighten, Annelise mirrored his smile.

Suddenly, Adrian spoke up from his seat, his voice low and edged with a cool curiosity. “How did you know the Caldwells were looking for someone?”

The question was sharp, almost accusatory.

Annelise’s eyes narrowed slightly. She met Adrian’s gaze, her own steady and unfathomable. “Just a guess. Yesterday, during Sir Caldwell’s treatment, he was half-conscious and kept muttering ‘Ana.””

“I thought Jonathon might’ve told you,” Adrian said, tilting his head with a faint, disarming smile as he returned to his chess game. “It doesn’t matter how you knew. Dr. Caldwell, you’re someone we trust.”

Chapter 37 Adrian Wants to Break Off the Engagement

Antonio raised an eyebrow at Adrian’s claim that Annelise was trustworthy.

“Since when do you trust anyone?” he asked.

Adrian brushed a speck of lint from his sleeve, his tone languid but deliberate. “Sir Caldwell, like you, my life’s in Dr. Caldwell’s hands. I’m just reading the room and giving credit where it’s due.”

Antonio couldn’t tell if Adrian was serious or just playing his usual games.

The man was a puzzle, always hiding his true intentions behind a frail facade and a mind full of cunning.

In hindsight, Antonio had often wondered if arranging Adrian’s engagement to Ana all those years ago had been the right call.

Still, the boy was undeniably handsome. Every young woman in their circle swooned over him.

After some thought, Antonio decided he couldn’t let Adrian off the hook. He wanted to keep this charming man for his granddaughter.
