“Why did he come to see you?” Stanley couldn’t wrap his head around this at all. “You guys have never had any business with each other. There’s never been any overlap.”
“He was the one who ordered someone to trigger Samuel’s allergic reaction,” Gregory explained.
Stanley blinked in disbelief.
Stanley swore, “Is he actually crazy?”
The two families had never crossed paths before.
They’d barely even run into each other at parties.
It’s totally out of line for him to pull something like this.
“So, what are you gonna do about him?” Stanley had heard about Samuel’s allergic reaction and was seriously pissed at the third heir of the Quinn family. “Want me to help you out?”
Jeffrey pressed his lips together. “Let’s wait until he shows up. No rush.”
Stanley snarked, “Looks like the meds wore off–starting to hurt now, huh?”
Jeffrey didn’t bother answering. He just turned to Gregory, “Still nothing?”
Stanley was speechless.
Gregory was speechless too.
Gregory glanced at his phone, seeing no new messages, and tried to soften it, “It’s lunchtime—Ms. Jensen’s probably just taking a break after eating.”
“Rest? Give me a break. She just flat–out doesn’t want to deal with someone like you,” Stanley scoffed, dropping any pretense of sparing Jeffrey’s feelings. “If she really cared about whether you lived or died, there’s no way she’d go this long without checking in on you.”
Jeffrey’s eyes darkened, the emotions swirling in them growing deeper.
He just stayed silent.
“If you honestly can’t stand it, I’ll go fetch her for you right now,” Stanley offered, unable to watch him mope. “Or you could have Gregory text–her and say things are getting worse–see if she’s really that cold or just acting like it.”
“Don’t bother,” Jeffrey shot back.
Stanley genuinely couldn’t figure him out. “Why the hell did you stab yourself anyway?”
Jeffrey didn’t say a word.

‘Maybe he just hit the breaking point and needed to do something extreme, Stanley guessed.
‘Or maybe he just needed an excuse to finally let her go!

‘Maybe he wanted to give her some space to think about their relationship–and give himself a chance to sort out whether he’d messed things up along the way!
“If you ask me, since you already went as far as stabbing yourself, you might as well use it to act a little pitiful and finally own up to everything–apologize for real,” Stanley said, not keen to see Jeffrey putting himself through all that drama.
Jeffrey just glared at him, clearly unimpressed.
“Aren’t you always the type to spin things your way?” Stanley pushed. “This is prime time for you.”
Jeffrey replied, “No need.”
All he wanted was to see clearly what she really thought.
Pulling some sympathy stunt was still just tricking people–and any feelings you get that way won’t stick around for long.
‘Stanley didn’t even know what to say.’
Stanley decided to mind his own business from now on.
For the next two days, Rebecca still didn’t reply to Gregory’s messages.
Jeffrey had waited at first, but in the end, he realized Rebecca was even more ruthless than he’d thought.
Meanwhile, Rebecca had her own stuff to deal with.
That same afternoon, when her mom came home and said the divorce was finally on track, she told Rebecca to sit down for a real talk with Ms. White, Attorney. At first, Rebecca thought maybe she should wait until Jeffrey was out of the woods, worried she might upset him.
But after mulling it over, she figured, “If he didn’t lose it with everything that’s happened, nothing I say is gonna faze him,” Rebecca thought to herself.
“Honestly, if he could keep his cool after all that, he’s not gonna crack just because of this,” she decided.
So she went and chatted with Ms. White, Attorney, giving her a quick summary of what was going on between her and Jeffrey.
After listening, Ms. White, Attorney advised her to have one more talk with Jeffrey–if he still refused to agree to the divorce, then just take it to court. She also told Rebecca to make sure to collect as much evidence as possible during the conversation.
So, on the afternoon of the third day following Jeffrey’s accident, Rebecca finally showed up.
The moment Gregory saw her walk in, his eyes sparkled.

Stanley let out a sigh of relief.

Both finally felt the tension in their chests ease up a little.

“Ms. Jensen, come on in,” Gregory greeted her enthusiastically, playing up how miserable Jeffrey’s been. “Mr. Hanson hasn’t been himself lately–barely cats and can hardly keep his spirits up.”
Rebecca just gave a noncommittal nod.
Gregory added, “He’ll be thrilled you came.”
Rebecca replied coolly, “Don’t bet on it.”
Gregory was taken aback.
Stanley just stared, baffled.
They shot each other a look–yeah, something was definitely wrong.
By now, the three of them were in Jeffrey’s hospital room. Seeing him pale and sleeping, Rebecca couldn’t help but glance at his chest where he’d been hurt.
“Mr. Hanson,” Gregory called softly as he approached the bed. “Ms. Jensen’s here.”
Jeffrey slowly opened his eyes.
His usually distant, cold gaze didn’t have that chilly edge now–he actually looked a bit gentler.
A flicker of emotion flashed in his eyes when he saw her step in.
“I need to talk to him alone,” Rebecca said as she casually placed her bag on the bedside cabinet. She wore something plain and understated.
Jeffrey shot them a look, clearly asking them to give him and Rebecca some privacy.
Gregory adjusted the bed for him, then obediently left the room together with Stanley.
Outside the door, the two just stood there.
They exchanged glances, both feeling a little uneasy.
Stanley finally spoke up, casting a look at the tightly closed door. “What do you think Ms. Jensen wants to talk to your boss about?”
Gregory ventured carefully, “Maybe she’s just here to see how he’s doing after the injury?”
“If she really cared about his injury, she would’ve dropped by the first day,” Stanley said, suspicion obvious in his voice. “Why bother showing up now? Something’s fishy.”
Honestly, the look on her face didn’t scream concern to Stanley–it was more like she had business to settle.

Actually, she seemed way more like she was here to cause a scene.

“Doesn’t really matter what they’re talking about,” Gregory shrugged, way more laid–back than Stanley. “As long as Ms. Jensen’s here, Mr. Hanson’s mood will definitely improve.”
Stanley kept his eyes fixed on the door.
‘Yeah, here’s hoping,‘ Stanley muttered to himself, not feeling all that optimistic.
In the room, Jeffrey was still getting an IV drip.
Sitting up a bit, he looked at Rebecca, who’d settled in next to him. The first thing out of his mouth was, “Did I freak you out that day?”
Rebecca was upfront. “I did.”
