“You got that right!” Peter quickly jumped in. “Only your big uncle could pull something like that.”
“Peter!” Michael’s face suddenly clouded over.
His good mood for the entire evening was shattered in that instant.
He honestly hadn’t expected Rebecca to have inherited so much of Amelia’s attitude when it came to stuff like this.
She always spoke with hidden barbs, never missing a chance to throw in a sharp jab.
“I’ll have someone send you the company documents and the assessment criteria in a couple of days,” Max said, his tone as cold as ever. “I’ll go over the details with you later.”
Rebecca replied, “Alright.”
“Come on, Cousin Rebecca, you’re really not sticking to your guns,” Jack teased, his tone light. “Uncle Michael just said he’d hand it straight over to you, didn’t he?”
Rebecca shot back, “Didn’t you hear him say there are risks involved?”
“Seriously? He’s the head of the family and CEO of Quinn Group. You think he can’t handle some tiny risk?” Jack said lazily, propping his chin up like he didn’t have a care in the world.
Rebecca said, “He could totally take care of it–he just doesn’t want to.”
“Then what’s with all that talk?” Jack questioned.
Rebecca replied, “Just so he can look like a big shot.”
Jack tsked, clearly enjoying the drama.
Michael was left speechless.
Michael was about to blow a gasket.
But he really couldn’t afford to blow up right now. If he let slip even a little bit of irritation toward Rebecca, all that pretending earlier would go straight down the drain.
“Mr. Sebastian Quinn, if there’s nothing else, I’m heading home,” Rebecca said. She really wasn’t in the mood to hang around any longer–tonight had peeled back the curtain on what the Quinn family was really like, and she didn’t need to see any more. ‘I’ve seen everything I needed to see, she thought.
Jack jumped in right away, flashing a grin as he said, “Let me walk you out, Cousin Rebecca.”
Sebastian’s eyes were full of unwillingness as he watched her go.
But he knew that tonight had upset Rebecca. He glanced over at Oliver and instructed, “Hand it over to her.”

Oliver immediately placed a box in Rebecca’s hands and said, “Ms. Rebecca, please accept this.”
Rebecca was like: ‘Huh?‘–totally lost for a moment.
“Come on, open it up,” Sebastian said.

Rebecca shot a quick look at everyone around her.
Sebastian noticed her hesitation and smiled, “It’s alright, go ahead.”
Rebecca rested her hand on the dainty sandalwood box, her slender, pale fingers gently lifting the lid. Nestled inside was a finely carved jade thumb ring, gleaming softly under the light.
‘Wait–what is this?‘ Rebecca thought, genuinely taken aback.
“Dad!” Peter snapped, unable to hold back anymore. “How could you give her something that valuable?”
“Dad, isn’t that a bit much?” Patricia added, her mood dropping fast. “Max is outstanding, and you’ve never given him anything like this. Why would you give it to someone who’s not even family?”
Michael’s face clouded over, dark and stormy.
No one could believe that Sebastian would actually present the jade thumb ring–the ultimate symbol of the Quinn family’s power–to Rebecca.
Traditionally, the jade thumb ring was supposed to be handed down through the generations–Sebastian would leave it to Michael after he passed, and Michael would pass it on to the most capable heir, Max.
But now…
It had somehow ended up in Rebecca’s hands!
An outsider–someone who wasn’t even a Quinn!
“What is this…” Rebecca murmured, her eyes widening as she caught the shock on everyone’s faces. “This must be some sort of big deal, she thought.
“It’s nothing particularly valuable, just something finely crafted that I thought you might like,” Sebastian said, playing it down. “If you like it, go ahead and put it on.”
The jade thumb ring was originally made to fit a man’s thumb.
Sebastian knew Rebecca’s fingers were way too slim for it, so before giving it to her, he had someone set an extra inner band to make sure it would fit her just right.
Rebecca instinctively glanced at Oliver and Max. Max didn’t bat an eye, and Oliver gave her a reassuring nod, signaling that it was okay to accept.
“This ring was your mother’s,” Sebastian said. Age had taught him a lot–he saw things clearer now. “I’m just giving it back to its rightful owner.”

“Thank you,” Rebecca murmured as she took the box.
‘Everything that was Mom’s… I’m taking it all back,‘ Rebecca vowed inside.
Sebastian Quinn finally let out a breath, his gaze shifting from Rebecca to Jack. “Call me once you’ve made sure Rebecca gets home safely.”
Jack shot him a playful grin. “Sure thing.”
“Cut out that cheeky smile,” Sebastian said, putting on a mock–serious face. “Just make sure Rebecca gets home in one piece–and if you get the chance, pop in and say hello to Aunt Mary.”
“Will do,” Jack replied, giving him a quick nod.
Jack got up and looked at Rebecca. “Let’s go, Cousin Rebecca.”

Rebecca paused, then said, “Take care of yourself. I’ll head home now.” She meant it, even if things had been tense tonight. ‘May as well say something nice before I leave,‘ she thought.
Sebastian Quinn managed a small smile, his mood turning a bit brighter. “Alright.”
Rebecca swept a look around the room. When her eyes met Aunt Mary’s kind, caring gaze, she just gave a slight nod–silent, but respectful.
Aunt Mary returned her nod with a gentle smile.
Beyond that, Rebecca didn’t say a word to anyone else.
She ignored the rest completely.
As they left, Liam whipped out his phone, fingers flying as he fired off a text. Michael couldn’t hold himself back any longer. With his face clouded over and voice tight, he confronted Sebastian: “Dad, what the hell was that supposed to mean?”
“Mean what?” Sebastian replied, totally chill and not backing down one bit.
“That ring is rightfully mine! How could you just hand it over to her?” Michael snarled, barely keeping his anger in check. “She’s not one of us! She doesn’t even carry the Quinn name!”
“You all are family to me–Amelia and Rebecca included,” Sebastian stated flatly. “If you want to call Rebecca an outsider, then I guess Max, Liam, and Jack are outsiders too.”
Michael looked absolutely sour, barely holding it together.
Peter didn’t look much better.
But honestly, seeing Michael—the guy who was supposed to inherit everything–sulking like that did lift Peter’s mood a bit.
“You know better than anyone that ring’s the very symbol of authority and standing in the Quinn family!” Michael shot back, barely keeping it together. “You handed it straight to her–did you even stop to think how

everyone’s going to talk about me once this gets out?”
The heirloom that was always meant for the family head had ended up in the hands of a girl–someone who wasn’t even one of their own.
Forget just outsiders–people would be gossiping nonstop, tossing snide remarks and mocking him both to his face and behind his back. Even the side branches of the Quinn clan would pile on with their own digs.
‘Dad’s basically throwing me under the bus here!‘ Michael raged to himself.
“When you guys used every dirty trick to force Amelia to give up her shares, were any of you worrying about what people would say?” Sebastian fired back–even he felt the sting of those words himself.
Michael didn’t even hesitate before blurting out, “Because you were backing us up!”
Sebastian’s gaze went distant for a second, as if he was suddenly somewhere else.
He couldn’t help but think, ‘Yeah, that’s true.’
Back then, he’d been confused–caught up in old traditions, putting boys above girls, caring way too much about what people thought. All that led him straight to the worst decision of his life.
“It’s settled. If you really care what people say about you, then maybe try being more capable yourself,” Sebastian said, firm and unforgiving. “And anyway, that ring was never yours in the first place.”
Michael was still seething, but he couldn’t win this–so he just stalked off, not bothering to hide how frustrated he was.
Peter had seen enough tonight; he just rolled his eyes and headed out, thinking to himself, ‘No way am I hanging around for the rest of this mess.‘
Soon enough, the main hall felt strangely empty–just Oliver, Sebastian, and Max sticking around.
Sebastian Quinn fixed his gaze on Max–the grandson who’d been calm and steady since he was a boy–and spoke gravely, “I gave the ring to Rebecca. Any issues with that?”
Max’s expression stayed perfectly icy, betraying nothing. “No.”
Sebastian pressed, “You sure?”
“Like you said, that ring always belonged to Aunt Amelia,” Max said smoothly. “Now that you’re giving it to Rebecca, it’s just going back to its rightful owner.”
“If your dad had even half your awareness, he wouldn’t be in this situation,” Sebastian Quinn said with a touch of heaviness in his tone. Turning his thoughts to the upcoming assessment, he asked, “So how are you planning to handle Rebecca’s test?”
Max said coolly, “I’ll handle it as usual.”
Sebastian’s brows drew together. “You’re not going to go easy on her?”
