“Then send another one,” Charlotte said, fiddling with her phone, her freshly done nails looking gorgeous. “Just say, ‘I really like you, can I sleep with you?” ”
Rebecca was speechless.
Rebecca shot a glance at her son.
Samuel tilted his little head up, looking absolutely adorable. “Do I have to say it again?”
“No need,” Rebecca said, unable to bring herself to let Samuel send that message. It was just too shameless. “You keep reading your book, and I’ll figure something out.”
“Okay,” Samuel replied obediently.
As soon as Rebecca headed back to the study, Samuel quickly sent Jeffrey a voice message. “Mr. Hanson, if you don’t make a move soon, I won’t just have a dozen new dads–Charlotte might bring me a dad who’s basically my big sis!”
Jeffrey was at his new house when he got the message.
He replied with a question mark.
Samuel: “Auntie Charlotte just asked Mom to call her ‘big sis.””
Jeffrey was at a loss for words.
Samuel: “Even though Mom turned her phone’s volume way down, I still heard Auntie Charlotte tell her to say, ‘I really like you, can I sleep with you?“”
Jeffrey absentmindedly stroked his phone, lost in thought.
After a long moment, he finally asked, “Did your mom say it?”
“No idea,” Samuel replied, deliberately glancing over at the study to make Jeffrey sweat a little. “She took her phone and went back inside, and her cheeks were kind of red when she left.”
“Mm.” Jeffrey responded flatly, though a hint of helplessness lingered in his voice.
Who she chatted with and what she talked about–none of it was his business anymore.
She’d set strict boundaries: no interfering in her life, no sending people to secretly watch over her, no tracking her, and definitely no showing up around her.
Samuel: “If you don’t care about Mom, then I’m not sharing anything with you anymore!”
Jeffrey typed something at first, paused, deleted it, and finally sent: [As long as you’re happy.]
Samuel saw the reply and decisively exited the conversation.

Chapter 274
‘He says he loves Mom, but never cares what she’s actually up to,‘ Samuel thought.
Who loves someone and doesn’t want to know how they’re doing?
‘Liar‘

Rebecca had no clue what those two were talking about. Once she got back to the study, she told Charlotte straight up about her actions.
Charlotte had known from the very beginning that Rebecca was as serious as they came, so after hearing her explanation, Charlotte just dropped the truth: “Liam Quinn was behind it.”
Rebecca thought back for a moment.
The last time she visited the Quinn family, Liam kind of took Michael’s side, but he wasn’t nearly as harsh as his mom was to her.
And yet, he still pulled this stunt behind her back.
But honestly, it wasn’t that surprising. If he could team up with Michael to hurt her mom before, then it made sense he’d try to build her up just to watch her crash and burn.
[Thanks.] Rebecca sent back.
Charlotte joked, “You sure you’re not scared I’m pulling your leg?”
Rebecca sent a voice message: ‘She wouldn’t do that,‘ she thought.
Charlotte: “But what if I am?”
Rebecca: “Guess I’d have to suck it up then.”
Charlotte couldn’t help smiling at the messages on her phone screen. She tapped the back button and left it at that.
That night, Rebecca scanned through the resumes of all her new company’s staff–now she had a decent snapshot of everyone’s strengths and quirks.

Meanwhile, over on Liam’s end, he was starting to get annoyed. It’d been two days and the internet was dead quiet. Without delay, he dialed Manager Tom. “You did post what I told you to, right?”
“Yes, I did,” Manager Tom replied, sounding a bit on edge.
“Then how come I haven’t gotten any notifications or updates?” Liam snapped, suddenly realizing maybe his team wasn’t as reliable as he thought.
“I’ll go check on it right now,” Manager Tom said quickly, trying not to piss Liam off. “I’ll report back once I’ve figured out what happened.”

Chapter 274
Liam could smell trouble brewing. “Exactly which media companies did you have push the story?”
Manager Tom ran through the names for him, one after another.
Once Liam’d heard them all, he sucked in a deep breath, watching his mood take a nosedive.
“Are you freaking brain–dead? Trinity Media belongs to Scott Group–you didn’t know that?”
“Of course I knew,” Manager Tom stammered, still not catching on. “That’s actually why I picked them- they’re one of the top dogs in Jelasburg. Even if anybody tries to dig up dirt, they won’t link it back to us.”
Liam took a deep breath, trying not to lose it.
‘Is he seriously trying to kill me with how dumb he is?‘ Liam fumed.
“Is there a problem?” Manager Tom asked, his voice trembling.
“The CEO of Scott Group is one of Rebecca’s elders,” Liam said, feeling his chest tighten in frustration. “Don’t you ever bother to check connections before doing anything?”
Manager Tom froze.
‘Damn, nobody told me about that,‘ he cursed inwardly, a flash of frustration crossing his mind.
“Do they know you were the one behind this?” Liam pressed, trying to get the full picture so he’d know how to handle things if he ever ran into Rebecca again.
“No, I used a third–party company to handle everything,” Manager Tom rushed to explain, worried Liam would blow up if he dragged his feet. “Even if they try to investigate, there’s no way their reach goes that far.”
Liam finally felt a bit more at ease.
After a brief pause, Liam instructed, “Figure out why none of the other companies are saying anything either, and make sure this goes viral before the holiday ends.”
Manager Tom replied instantly, “Sure thing!”
Half an hour later, Liam got his answer.
**
Every single company had their stories killed by someone up top.
“Who ordered it?” Liam demanded.
Manager Tom sounded lost. “Not a clue.”
Liam paused to think. In all of Honnala, only the Pierce family had the kind of pull to shut down every outlet –honestly, they’re basically industry leaders around here.
Thinking of that, he called Charlotte, since she ran Starlight Media herself.

He laid out the situation and went ahead with his real question: “Has anyone talked to you about killing any stories lately?”
“Yeah,” Charlotte answered, not even hesitating.
