Jeffrey was pleased with how perceptive she was. He joined Rebecca for a walk and some conversation, then asked her about the project. “Is everything going smoothly?”

Rebecca nodded, “Everything’s going well.”

Jeffrey said, “If you need any help, just let me know.”

Rebecca stopped walking.

Jeffrey stopped too.

“There’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you,” Rebecca said.

Jeffrey nodded, “Go ahead.”

Rebecca kept her voice steady, but there was an earnest look in her eyes. “Do you see me as someone you’ve always had to support? Like I’m just the girl who needs taking care of, who couldn’t make it on her own?”

“No,” Jeffrey replied.

“Was it always that way for you, or did you just start thinking differently?” Rebecca asked.

She didn’t really need an answer, not really. Some things just gnawed at her deep down. If she didn’t get clarity, she’d toss and turn at night, stuck in that uneasy mood.

Jeffrey answered with conviction, “It’s never been like that. You’ve always been strong and capable in my eyes.”

Rebecca thought to herself, ‘He’s just saying that to comfort me.‘ But honestly, maybe splitting up wasn’t so bad after all.

If Andrea hadn’t come into the picture, she’d probably still be Jeffrey’s stay–at–home wife. For the next five or even ten years, he might have kept doting on her like always. But then what?

He’d be working all day, and she’d be stuck at home.

Their conversations would dry up, and eventually, the spark would fade. He’d take back all his special treatment, all those little exceptions just for her.

He wouldn’t cheat, though. He was the kind of guy who was stubbornly loyal to his promises.

But eventually, there wouldn’t be any love left between them. They’d go from sharing everything to having nothing to talk about, from being each other’s one and only to being just someone on the sidelines. From truly mattering to each other, to being nothing important at all. From saying “I love you” to just “I’m busy.”

“Rebecca,” Jeffrey called softly, bringing her back to herself.

Rebecca looked up and met his eyes.

Jeffrey reached out and held her hand in his broad palm, his dark eyes filled with true emotion. “Hurting you. was my fault, but I never want you to doubt yourself–or my feelings for you.”

Rebecca turned her gaze away from him.

Sometimes having your ex know you inside and out isn’t exactly such a blessing.

“All I want is you,” Jeffrey said as he stepped a little closer, his voice soft and deep, practically enchanting. “No matter how you change, who you are will always stay the same.”

Rebecca pulled her hand free and instinctively scooted back a little. “Sweet words are easy to say.”

Even the most aloof cat will cozy up if there’s food involved.

And people? If even a cat knows how to cozy up for a treat, you can bet a human with an agenda will do whatever it takes to get what they want.

“If you really understood what you mean to me, you wouldn’t have these doubts,” Jeffrey said, his voice sincere with every word.

“I honestly don’t know how much I mean to you,” Rebecca replied. “All I know is that when Andrea came along with your promises, it was like you didn’t care about me at all–even if you had your reasons.”

Jeffrey said, “I’m sorry.”

Rebecca didn’t feel much of anything anymore.

“That promise…it literally cost someone their life,” Jeffrey admitted to Rebecca for the first time. “I’d do anything for you–even put myself between you and danger. But what happened, it’s something I owe him.”

If he hadn’t left for overseas, Andrew never would’ve gotten hurt.

If he hadn’t helped Marcus turn the Hanson Group into a powerhouse, handing him all those business. strategies and advice, Marcus wouldn’t be half as successful as he is now.

When you got down to it, it all came back to him.

He was the reason Andrew ended up getting hurt.

“But I promise you, no matter what happens, I’ll never let anything make me give up on you,” Jeffrey said, not caring if she wanted to be with him or not. He just wanted her to feel secure. “You always come first.”

But that didn’t cheer Rebecca up at all.

She knew Jeffrey was someone who always kept his word, but what she needed wasn’t just some rigid Al who only followed orders and never knew how to adapt.

“Don’t make promises so easily,” Rebecca reminded him. “I don’t want things to go down the same road as

before.”

Jeffrey looked like he wanted to say more.

Rebecca didn’t give him the chance–she simply walked off toward Jessica and the rest.

Just then, Barry shuffled over, head hanging low, his arms and legs still aching like crazy. “Mr. Hanson.”

Jeffrey didn’t say a word, his eyes locked on Rebecca.

Gregory wasted no time, steering Barry away from the scene.

‘Who’d be dumb enough to mess with him right now?‘ Gregory grumbled to himself.

For the rest of the time, Rebecca, Jessica, and Riley were all messing around and making Samuel laugh, while Jeffrey sat off to the side, just watching them from a distance.

Ryan had been worried that whatever Jeffrey said to Rebecca back in the locker room might have smoothed things over between them for good. But watching now, he saw that nothing had changed–Jeffrey still wasn’t anything special, and Rebecca was as indifferent to him as ever.

“Next week, have Becky come home to the Hanson residence for dinner,” Old Mr. Lawrence said, suddenly appearing. “It’s time for a family gathering.”

Ryan didn’t even hesitate. “Not interested.”

Old Mr. Lawrence said, “I’m not inviting you.”

Ryan replied, “I’m declining on Becky’s behalf.”

Old Mr. Lawrence’s face was set in a frown, clearly unhappy with Ryan’s attitude. “I saw how Jeffrey treats Becky. Don’t you think it’s about time she met the rest of the family?”

“I don’t see the point in her meeting them. I’m not wasting Becky’s time,” Ryan replied flatly.

“How’s she supposed to take over the Guzman family, or the Guzman Group, if she doesn’t even know the people involved?” Old Mr. Lawrence said, his voice cold. “You really think they’ll just let you hand your shares over to a girl they barely know?”

Ryan shot him a look.

Old Mr. Lawrence spelled it out. “You know their tempers better than I do. You and Rebecca haven’t even done a proper DNA test yet. Technically, your shares ought to go to your uncle’s child.”

“Who I pass my shares to isn’t for them to dictate,” Ryan shot back.

“True, they can’t boss you around to your face–but you can’t stop them scheming in the shadows,” Old Mr. Lawrence said, as crafty as ever. “You really want Becky slammed with a busy job, wrangling the Quinn family, and dealing with those vultures all at once?”

Ryan said, “I’ll take care of it.”
