A flicker of surprise flashed across Willow’s bright hazel eyes. “Waller?”
So that’s how it is.
It made sense, really. In this life, she and Ryan had only met a handful of times—hardly enough to be called friends. Waller must have been worried about her and quietly asked Ryan to keep an eye on her.
“If you see him, thank him for me,” Willow finally said, after her thoughts had spun in circles.
Ryan shot her an amused sidelong glance. “You don’t have his number?”
A faint flush crept up Willow’s neck, her voice a little flustered. “I do.”
“Then there you go. If you really want to thank him, he should be off-duty this weekend. You could invite him to dinner, or get him a small gift.”
Honestly, Ryan was curious to see Waller’s reaction to receiving a present from a woman—he imagined it’d be priceless.
Willow tried to ignore the warmth in her ears and nodded lightly. “Alright.”
Giving Waller a gift… Truth be told, aside from birthdays or the odd holiday, she’d never really given a present to a man before. Even with Beasley—the jerk—she’d only ever bought him something for his birthday.
Deep down, Willow knew: if Beasley wouldn’t accept the painstakingly chosen birthday gift she’d prepared, there was no point in giving him anything else. So she never bothered with any more little surprises.
Ryan seemed genuinely pleased by Willow’s straightforward answer. He thoughtfully rattled off a few helpful tips: “If you want to invite him to dinner, he loves spicy food—think Southern-style cuisine, the hotter the better. If you’re buying a gift, he doesn’t have any crazy hobbies, but he’s obsessed with building model fighter jets at home. And if you want to hang out somewhere, it’s best if you plan the day. Otherwise, you two might just end up at the same spot all day without moving an inch.”
A faint smile tugged at Willow’s lips as she listened. Everything Ryan said was familiar—after all, in her past life, she and Waller had been “allies” for two years. She knew his quirks and tastes better than most. Plus, Waller’s mother had shared plenty of funny stories about his childhood with her.
Seeing Willow so absorbed—and even smiling—Ryan was even more convinced these two had a real shot.
