It was 6:00 pm. Donovan had finished work earlier than usual and headed straight back to his villa after a few meetings.
Recently, he had been unable to focus on his work. He had postponed all business trips and pushed aside everything except for critical meetings, key clients, and major projects.
Each day, he was either at the hospital visiting Zachary or at the office until midnight, chain-smoking or drinking himself into oblivion. Most nights, he crashed in the rest area of the office, barely returning to his private home.
He avoided his home because every time he walked through the front door, he saw traces of Giselle. Her presence lingered in every corner, with memories of their time together haunting the rooms. Some of her clothes and personal items—things she hadn't taken with her—were still there.
Seeing them created a suffocating heaviness in his chest. He felt too depressed to do anything but reach for more alcohol, desperate to numb the pain.
When he returned to the empty living room, he sank into the couch and leaned back, lost in thought. Just then, Benjamin walked in with a package.
"Mr. Kane, you've received a delivery. Would you like to open it yourself?" he asked respectfully.
Donovan glanced casually at the modest, square-shaped package. A hint of confusion flickered in his eyes.
Someone of his status never ordered random things online. On the rare occasion he received deliveries, it was usually important documents from international clients that required his signature. Those were typically sent to the office.
Additionally, no one outside his inner circle was aware that this was his private residence. Who would send something here? A sample from a pharmaceutical client, perhaps?
He picked up the box and glanced at the sender's details. It was anonymous; even the phone number was hidden.
Grabbing a fruit knife from the table, he mindlessly sliced through the tape and opened the cardboard box. Inside was a small wooden box.
