Benjamin was confused. He'd only ever seen women throw up from pregnancy. So why was a grown man like Donovan vomiting like this? Was he pregnant too?
As he voiced his concern, Benjamin bent down to pick up the box Donovan had dropped, but Donovan immediately stopped him. Gasps of breath escaped him as he barked, "Get out! Leave it!"
His face had suddenly darkened, the shift in his expression so terrifying that Benjamin had no choice but to retreat.
Donovan hastily closed the box, unable to bring himself to look inside again. His heart was still pounding uncontrollably, and the image from earlier played on repeat in his mind. Slumped back on the couch, it took him a long time to gather his thoughts.
He had no idea Giselle could be so vicious, so shameless, or so completely amoral.
He hadn't expected her to terminate the pregnancy so soon, and even less that she would box up what had been scraped from her uterus and send it to him as revenge.
When she told him she was pregnant, he'd assumed she'd faked the report to manipulate him. At the time, Zachary was on the brink of death, and Donovan was already mentally and physically drained. He had snapped, saying things he probably shouldn't have.
But never, not in his darkest imagination, had he thought she would take it this far.
And he had to admit, her revenge had worked.
The pile of bloody, shapeless flesh had hit him harder than anything he'd ever faced. Even after all the chaos he'd experienced in his life, nothing prepared him for this. To see what could have been his child reduced to a pile of biohazard waste and to know Giselle had deliberately turned it into a weapon to disgust him.
He couldn't get past it. It was as if someone had driven a knife straight into his heart and twisted it.
He sat on the couch, one hand pressed against his forehead, his chest heaving violently. He couldn't calm down.
Of course. This was exactly like her—that ruthless, deranged, vindictive streak she'd always had. Always quick to retaliate and capable of doing the unthinkable.
She hadn't changed a bit.
