It had been less than a month since Zachary's car accident, and Giselle had yet to visit him in the hospital. But now, seeing the message he sent, her heart that had been calmed for days was suddenly stirred again.
She hadn't expected that someone who had just been pulled back from the edge of death would still be thinking about her, asking how she was doing.
Still, knowing he was well enough to use his phone and message her brought her a bit of relief.
She had decided to cut all ties with the Kane family, and her first instinct was not to reply at all. She even considered blocking him.
But when she thought back to the accident, to how innocent and sincere he had been throughout everything, and especially how she had once used him and nearly cost him his life, she couldn't bring herself to ignore him completely.
To look the other way now would be utterly heartless.
After much hesitation, she finally made her way, quietly, to the private luxury hospital where Zachary was staying, just to say a final goodbye.
She came fully disguised with a mask, sunglasses, long sleeves, pants, and flat shoes. Everything about her outfit was deliberately casual, understated, and non-flashy. She was trying to draw as little attention as possible.
When she reached the hallway outside his room, she kept her distance, observing from the shadows. She saw Grace and Dorothea exiting his room. They had probably just finished their visit and were heading off for lunch.
A little while later, nurses went in to change his bandages. That took over ten minutes. Then an orderly entered for a few more minutes and left again.
Once she was sure there was no one else inside, she took a deep breath and quietly pushed open the door.
