Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 144

Giselle called Anne on WhatsApp.

It rang for less than a minute before she answered and yelled at her, "What the hell do you want? Are you out of your fucking mind?"

"Your fiance showed up at my place and tried to harass me, so I beat him up until his head bled. Now, he's lying outside my door. Come get him!" With that, Giselle hung up on Anne.

Giselle returned to her bedroom, slammed the door shut, and locked it securely. Whether the man outside lived or died no longer concerned her. Plus, she didn't want to get involved with him anymore.

Even if he dropped dead the next second, not an ounce of pity would stir in her.

Closing her eyes, she thought about the excruciating pain she had felt lying on the operating table during her abortion, the child she had lost forever, and the crushing fact that she could never become a mother again. Even with a heart that had long since gone barren, the grief pulsed through her in quiet waves.

Donovan sat slumped against the wall outside her door. Blood from the gash on his head had run down his face and soaked his shirt.

His old and fresh wounds blended into a dull throb that blurred the edges of his consciousness. Yet, he didn't want to move or call anyone. He habitually lit a cigarette, drowning himself in the brief relief the smoke provided.

Donovan had finally realized that their relationship was truly over. The chaos he kept stirring up, the outbursts, and the confrontations were just because he couldn't get used to living in a world where she no longer screamed, argued, or clung to him.

He didn't even know what he wanted from her anymore. All he knew was that he wasn't used to her absence.
