Giselle found the assistant manager and asked about the two rings they'd just chosen. Together, they came to a total of 8.6 million dollars.

"Take me to the register so I can pay," she said.

The assistant manager blinked. "You're paying?"

"Yes." She came up with an easy excuse. "Mr. Grayson already transferred the money to me. He's busy inside, so I'll take care of it now. Just have them wrapped up."

Though puzzled, the assistant manager didn't press her. He led her to the cashier, where she swiped her own card and settled the bill.

Only then did she return to Gideon. Leaning close, she murmured, "Take the rings and let's go. I already paid."

"You've paid?" His eyes narrowed.

"Yes. No need for you to spend anything today." For his pride, she added quietly in his ear, "Don't worry. I told them you'd transferred the money to me. Let's just leave. We'll talk outside."

Still looking confused, Gideon picked up the two boxes containing the obscenely expensive engagement rings and followed her out.

Once they were in the car, he didn't start the engine right away. His expression had darkened. "What was that about? I told you this was my gift to you. Why did you insist on paying? You think I can't afford it?"

"Of course not." She leaned back in her seat, eyes fixed on the road ahead. "It can be my gift to you instead. It doesn't always have to be you giving to me. Besides, I've already decided that if we get married, I'll cover all the costs."

He gave a short, incredulous laugh. "So what? Are you planning to marry me into the family? Make me a kept man? Should I expect a dowry too?"
