Donovan shot Gideon a brief, indifferent glance. The memory of Giselle's glowing praise was still festering in his chest like a suffocating weight.
He turned to leave without a word. But then, Gideon called out to him.
"Mr. Kane," he said, his tone edged with warning. "Now that she's back safely, it's time we all return to our proper places. Please show some composure worthy of a big-time CEO. In a week, she'll be my lawful wife. If I catch you harassing her again, you know exactly what I'll do."
Donovan turned his back to Gideon and closed his eyes disdainfully. Even though a storm of fury raged inside him, he forced it down.
In the end, he didn't dignify Gideon's childish threats with a response. He shoved one hand in his pocket and strode toward the gates of the complex.
Gideon assumed Donovan had finally accepted reality and surrendered, so he didn't dwell on it further. With the two leashes in hand, he took the elevator upstairs and stepped into Giselle's home.
"You're here this early? Didn't you say that you'd be here at noon?" she asked, her earlier gloom lifting the moment she saw him walk in with the dogs.
"It wasn't my idea to show up," Gideon said with a grin. "Your kid here missed you. He kept whining and tugging at my sleeve until I dragged him back to you."
Squatting down, he affectionately stroked Eastin's head. "While you were gone, he settled in just fine at my place, but every now and then he'd run out to look for you. When I went abroad to search for you, I brought him along, hoping he'd help track you down. Oh, and that time we found you trapped in that county? It was all thanks to him leading the way."
Not having seen Eastin in so long, Giselle was overjoyed. She immediately crouched down to shower him with affection.
Seeing how well-cared for he was—his coat smooth and shiny—a flicker of gratitude toward Gideon filled her chest.
