Giselle felt her heart grow heavy. Nonchalantly, she replied, "To be honest, we've never actually dated. So, you don't have to make me out to be such an important person to you. Initially, I only wanted to marry you in order to help me get over my past."
She continued, "After everything that's happened, I think we can safely conclude that we're just not meant to be together. I think it's good that we called it quits before the situation got any worse.
"Don't worry, I won't cut off all contact with you. As long as you decide to be a responsible father, we can still continue to be friends."
"What makes you think I want to be friends with you?" Gideon snapped.
He was seething at the mention of staying friends with her.
Staring at her with a burning gaze, he yelled, "I want you to be mine—I don't want us to be anything else other than a couple! As long as you don't abandon me, I'll be able to get past all these problems with ease.
"After we get married, you'll be entitled to all of my assets. The kid won't take anything from you! Right now, I'm just asking you to give me some time.
"Please give me a chance. We'll postpone the wedding for now. I'm willing to do everything for you as long as you don't give up on us…"
When Giselle thought about Cecilia and the crying child she saw at Gideon's villa, she couldn't bring herself to give Gideon another chance.
"You can just keep your feelings for me to yourself," she said rationally as she turned away from him. "We're both from broken families, remember? You and I both know how important it is for a child to have an intact family."
She added, "So, you should stop being so selfish. You're only upset because you haven't had enough time to process this. Everything will heal with time."
"An intact family? What a load of crap," Gideon spat.
Feeling more agitated than before, he snarled, "My life is basically over if you're not going to be a part of it! Do you think I'll still be in the mood to raise a damn brat?
"I'll think about how much pain he's caused me every time I look at him! Do you think I'll still be able to love him like a responsible parent?"
As someone who'd been abandoned when he was a child, Gideon didn't feel any love for the child that suddenly appeared in his life. Having never received any love from his biological parents, he was unable to step up and be a competent father for his new child.
